Dr Hugh Selby Covernton was born in Salford, Lancashire, England.
He was baptised on 12 Sep 1869 at Hawarden, Flint, Wales UK.
He married Beatrice Alice Poole (daughter of RevFrederic Poole) in 1906, at North Adelaide.
Dr. Hugh Selby Covernton, of Military Road, Semaphore, and father of Dr. John Covernton of Gawler, died at his residence on Monday at the age of 70 years. Dr. Covernton was a household word in the homes of Gawler several years ago, for he practised in the town, for 21 years and was hugely popular. He left to enter into partnership with Dr. A.V. Benson and F. St. John Poole at, Semaphore.
In all the Doctor gave 42 years of his life to the medical profession in South Australia.
Born in Lancashire, England, Dr Covernton received his education at the Merchant Taylor school, London, and graduated at the Middlesex Hospital. He came to South Australia 42 years ago and took up practice at Gawler. Before coming to Australia Dr Covernton was a prominent Rugby player in England. He was always interested in sport, particularly in racing, and was the Port Adelaide Racing Club surgeon since 1916 as well as being a member of the Amateur Turf and Gawler Racing clubs.
He was a former president of the South Australian branches of the Australian Nurses Association and then the Nurses' Federation. For more than 20 years he was an active member' of the Port Adelaide Institute committee and was president on several occasions. He was a member of the Gawler Freemasons' Lodge.
He is survived by a widow formerly Miss Beatrice Alice Poole, daughter of the late Canon Slaney Poole. There is one son (as mentioned) Dr. John of Gawler. 1.
