|Type of thing||Government|

The opening of the Town of Gawler’s redeveloped Civic Centre in April 2019 included a new heritage gallery and heritage research centre which were key components in rebranding the City’s approach to cultural heritage tourism and Gawler’s history.
The first exhibition in this space has been titled "Into the Light". This beautiful exhibition explores some of the significant historical forces which have shaped Gawler’s sense of place and identity from Kaurna custodianship to European colonisation in the 19th century. Of Importance, "Into the Light" focuses on what was then South Australia’s and Australia’s most important historic collection – the Gawler Institute Collection.
"Into the Light" is the work of cultural heritage consultant, museum and exhibition designer and historian, Denise Schumann, of Schumann & Associates. The Town of Gawler commissioned Denise Schumann to design and develop this first exhibition following her five-year commitment to project manage the design and fit-out of the State Heritage listed Gawler Institute Reading Room, Institute Library , the Cultural Heritage Research and Archives Centre, and the new Gawler Heritage Exhibition Gallery. Schumann worked tirelessly to ensure that the Town of Gawler’s history and cultural heritage were a core part of the new civic project referred to as ‘Gawler Connect’.
