This Hall was transported from Sandy Creek in c1945. It was enhanced by the Gawler Blocks community to become a focal point for meetings, the regular Gawler Blocks dances, and Gawler Blocks Tennis Club.

The Gawler Blocks Committee created a very active Tennis Club and ran regular 60/40 dances on Saturday nights. These dances were very popular and featured Kevin Howard's Band [among others] and were alcohol-free. Patrons anxious to imbibe had to travel at least 300 yards from the Hall so as to conform with the then current Licensing Laws. This dance was famous for its magnificent suppers [including strawberries and ice-cream].

A comprehensive account of the establishment of this area and the Gawler Blocks Hall was outlined in a 3 hour video taken of Mr Stan Coles in recent years, recorded by Brian Thom.

A written transcript of Stan’s interview was created to coincide with the Town of Gawler establishing the new Evanston Gardens Community facility, which was constructed to blend harmoniously with the old hall and its subsequent upgrading. The foyer of the new facility was dedicated to the memory of Stan and Rose Coles; in recognition of the meritorious service of the Coles family to maintain and develop the Hall and in the organizing of many activities in and around the Hall, over many years.

The Town of Gawler was incorporated in July 1857 but it was not until 1868 that Council began to discuss the need to build a town hall. As with many things that are done in Gawler, only after years of controversy was a site chosen and the building constructed.
The first offer of land (in 1868) was from John McEwin, the proprietor of the Prince Albert Hotel in Murray Street. He offered to donate land next to the Hotel which would have been suitable for the institute, town hall, council chamber and council offices. Council rejected his offer (which came with the condition that a building to the value of £5000 be erected within three years), resulting in a no-confidence motion in Council and the eventual withdrawal of the offer.

The matter of the location of the town hall was again considered in 1872 (a site on Lyndoch Road), 1873 (within the northern market allotment) and 1875 (another site on Lyndoch Road). At a meeting of ratepayers, the majority voted for the northern market option but when a legal opinion was sought, it was discovered that the trust deed conveyed to council in 1864 prevented anything other than a market to be built on the land.

In 1877, the southern market allotment which was owned by Council was proposed as a suitable site to build the town Hall. This was rejected and an alternative site on the Park Lands opposite walker Place was given consideration. General agreement could not be reached and another poll of ratepayers resulted in the majority voting for the purchase of land in Murray Street, next to the Gawler Institute. A designer and builder were engaged and a contract signed for completion of work within seven months of the commencement date of 1 January 1878.

James Martin (Mayor of Gawler at the time) laid the foundation stone on 16 April 1878. The grand opening created much excitement in the town. The Governor of South Australia, Sir William Jervois, officially opened the building on 20 November 1878.

The first attempt to establish a mechanics’ institute at Gawler was made by Walter Duffield in 1848. The men of Gawler were not ready for such an organisation but the idea was not forgotten and eventually the Gawler Institute was formed in October 1857.
Committee meetings were first held at the home of James Martin in Murray Street until arrangements were made to hire a room in a building opposite the Globe (now Kingsford) Hotel. On 3 November 1857, the Gawler Institute was officially opened with a concert. During 1858, the Oddfellows Hall was built in Murray Street and the Institute Committee rented the rooms on the ground floor and leased the hall above for twelve concerts a year.

The popularity of the Gawler Institute grew rapidly in the first few years. By 1860 it held 2000 books and other printed matter and 200 subscribers were listed on its books (the free lending library that we know today was still more than a hundred years in the future). For at least the first ten years, a celebratory event was held on the anniversary of its formation. Most well-known of these celebrations was The Song of Australia competition for the Institute's second anniversary.

The seventh anniversary was celebrated with a fair on the Park Lands. Proceeds were used to begin the Gawler Institute building fund – the push was on to build a permanent home for the Institute. The people of Gawler were urged to raise the money required and a hug art union realised about £1000.Residents were assessed for subscriptions and told how much they were expected to pay and twenty of the more prominent of the town signed a bank guarantee for the loan of £1000. Unfortunately there was a debt of £1600 when the building was finished but it was cleared by £1000 in funds which were made available from the South Australian Parliament and by another assessment of residents.
The land upon which the institute was to be built was donated by James Martin, who also drew up the plans for the building. The foundation stone was laid on 13 April 1870 and the building was completed a year later.

During 1858, the Oddfellows Hall was built in Murray Street and the Institute Committee rented the rooms on the ground floor and leased the hall above for twelve concerts a year.

The popularity of the Gawler Institute grew rapidly in the first few years. By 1860 it held 2000 books and other printed matter and 200 subscribers were listed on its books (the free lending library that we know today was still more than a hundred years in the future). For at least the first ten years, a celebratory event was held on the anniversary of its formation. Most well-known of these celebrations was The Song of Australia competition for the Institute's second anniversary.

The seventh anniversary was celebrated with a fair on the Park Lands. Proceeds were used to begin the Gawler Institute building fund – the push was on to build a permanent home for the Institute. The people of Gawler were urged to raise the money required and a hug art union realised about £1000.Residents were assessed for subscriptions and told how much they were expected to pay and twenty of the more prominent of the town signed a bank guarantee for the loan of £1000. Unfortunately there was a debt of £1600 when the building was finished but it was cleared by £1000 in funds which were made available from the South Australian Parliament and by another assessment of residents.
The land upon which the institute was to be built was donated by James Martin, who also drew up the plans for the building. The foundation stone was laid on 13 April 1870 and the building was completed a year later.
