The Gawler A, H & F Society was first established in 1856, as the central point of a large agricultural district where the town’s people sought the opportunity to meet, celebrate and trade. The first “Show” highlighted the crop, sheep and other pastoral strengths associated with the region. The inaugural committee were highly regarded people in Gawler; several were local councillors and could see the merit of bringing a large festival to this region. Since this time the Gawler A, H & F Society has grown in size and popularity.

While the Gawler Show is still about the variety of competitions based on Agriculture, Horticulture and Floriculture, it has also grown and adapted to continue to suit the requirements of people from all over the district. As the township of Gawler grew, its focus on agricultural pursuits has changed and the current Gawler Show goes to great lengths to incorporate educational elements to ensure the history and integrity of Agricultural Shows does not cease to exist.

The key aim was to host a community event; this is still the paramount aim today. As a volunteer not for profit Society, we are blessed with the good nature of hundreds of people from around the district who donate their time, ability and passion to assist with hosting South Australia’s largest country show. To enable this success we recruit many of the other local organisations and clubs to assist us in the lead up to and running of the event. These organisations benefit in return from a variety of incentives such as: financial remuneration by donation, marketing opportunities by being seen as being involved and in the overall good spirit that is shared by so many.

Today’s annual Gawler Show is Gawler’s key tourism event and boasts of 6,500 entries in the 27 different competition sections, over 300 trade sites, 30 Catering opportunities and entertainment from local, national and international backgrounds. Rolled into a full weekend of fun and entertainment, the Gawler Show proudly sees an estimated gate attendance of 30,000 people and continues to go from strength to strength guided by a dedicated volunteer army of people displaying the great attributes of country life and living.
Presidents Report Gawler A.H. & F. Society’s 2015.
This has been the 159th Gawler Show that has been held.

Attended by Hon John Dawkins MLC, Member for Wakefield Nick Champion, Opposition Leader Stephen Marshall, Stephan Knoll Member for Schubert, Janet Done on behalf of Minister Tony Piccolo MP the Member for Light, and our major sponsor Foodland Gawler, the show was opened by the Chairperson Steve Frinsdorf and the Mayor of the Town of Gawler Karen Redman.

The show was attended by many distinguished guests and sponsors; supported by Past Presidents, Gawler Show Management team, volunteers and the youth committee.

Few people would deny that in 2015 it was difficult to raise sponsorship. The Northern Gawler Region is being challenged like never before with the loss of Holdens. It is a massive blow for the region, and for its workers and the broader community. This year has been a year of many changes but, with the help of our board with its fantastic leadership skills, knowledge and experience, we were able to weather the storm.

We have employed a new Show secretary Kate Cowell, who has been pivotal in bringing this all together, supported by her administration team.

Some entries were down in handicrafts, but the beer and olive oil was up; showcasing the best of the Gawler Region. The new fantastic greyhound building was well supported with the public and the highlights were the fireworks on the Saturday night. As usual, the horses are a main drawcard, with their chance to qualify for FIA standard.

We thank our major sponsor Gawler Drakes Foodland and all our long-term sponsors who provide support and prizes and to all the sponsors; like wine from Virgara Winery at Angle Vale, Brereton Jewellers, and Gawler Fasta Pasta etc. We also thank the Town of Gawler for its long-term support over the years, for the use of the site and in-kind financial support; the years of support given by Bob and Marg Ahrens for the steam model displays; and the judges and convenors for their tireless time spent in managing the event. We have had in-kind support from the Bunyip newspaper and Channel 7, and Radio Nova Five AA has been spreading the word. Technology is changing, with many people looking at our site on Facebook.

The Board has started the process of updating our constitution and had a new member join the Board; an exciting new era indeed. This was a year of many changes in the Management structure of the show. All committee members stepped up and gave 100% and with the support of the old members, it was hard to beat.

Many of the life members may not come on the day but still put up prizes, and it has been great meeting up with many at the Show Office.

We also trialled a trailer mounted direction for parking, as well as installing traffic monitoring crowd control. We had an onsite safety officer maintain our risk management.

The usual crowd pleaser, the animal nursery, and the Treasure Trail were well used.
Another feature was more music on the ground, as well in the Youth Shack. Many tried the adventure of the bucking bull. The choice of food was staggering and with the larger tents, we had all sites in use. We are thrilled to have a great number of entries in many classes, as well as the horses at such a high level. The family tradition of showing cakes and scones using Laucke flour is alive and expanding.

Julianne Grillet is thanked for again producing the Gawler Show Book to be out on time. Xavier College students are thanked for their input in designing the front cover.

Patricia Dent OAM conducted the Rural Ambassadors Programme and set up the Greyhounds building for the Show lunch, and it was great to see we have continued interest in promoting Agriculture in our region.

Dean & Dot Knoll shone as the troopers they are. Jim Downer and his wife Gaye kept an eye on the finances and the parking. Sigrid Murljacic was in charge of trade sites, and Chantelle Tesselaar, the music. We thank Sheree Woithe for her team of indoor judges.
Julie Martin gave outstanding leadership in the animal nursery and Angela Nemeth must be thanked for her intervention in lifting the profile of the goats and poultry.

Further thanks go to Di Birmingham for her control of the horse rings, Aaron for many hours onsite time managing the team and communications, Aaron Cowell for site management and forklift skills, and the Willo’s Men’s shed and Probus members gave us great support.

A very sad and special mention must be made to Graham “Kanga” Parham who fought hard to be at the Show, but it was not to be. He made his mark on Horse judging at an Olympic standard at the Gawler Show over many years. His legacy will live on and he will always be remembered for his achievements and we are deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

All in all, another great year for Gawler Show and the pivotal role it plays in showcasing the region. It was a great opportunity to meet old friends.
We had over 220 Judges and Convenor’s and up to a further 80 from Service Clubs who support our car parking endeavours. We look forward to working together to create the 160th Gawler Show - all run by Volunteers who support Gawler.

Twenty-eight years after the first settlers arrived in Gawler, the first dedicated post office was officially opened. Gawler had always had a mail service. The first building in Murray Street, The Golden Fleece Hotel (later the Old Spot Hotel) served many purposes including as a place for the acceptance and delivery of the town's mail. During the early 1840s the owner of the Old Spot Hotel, Henry Calton, served as Gawler's first postmaster. Henry Gozzard became postmaster during the 1840s and continued into the 1850s. He operated the post office from his bakery shop in Murray Street. After his death his assistant, Henry Dean, was appointed acting postmaster.

In the early 1860s the post office business was moved to the telegraph Station (now the National Trust Museum). At this time Mr W Rossi was appointed as the first official postmaster. this arrangement did not suit some of the residents of Gawler and moves were made to have a dedicated post office built.

In the 11 May edition of the South Australian Register, the Gawler "Correspondent" reported on a meeting of a committee that had been formed to collect signatures on a 'memorial' to the South Australian Government requesting the construction of a post office in Gawler. It was suggested that if the building had a cupola or tower of some sort, the people of Gawler would raise the funds to put a clock in it. The Gawler "Correspondent" thought that this would "be of immense advantage in the town to regulate time, as at present everyone in Gawler seems to keep his own time and sometimes miss a post or a train in consequence". (South Australian Register, 11 May 1865, p.2).

By August 1863, the South Australian Government had agreed to build a post office and the site next to the Telegraph Station was confirmed (South Australian Register, 22 August 1865, p.3).

With much ceremony the foundation stone was laid on 8 August 1866. Copies of newspapers of the day and coins were deposited in a bottle and laid under the foundation stone together with a document stating that the Mayor, Mr J Mitchell, and other dignitaries were present.

The Bunyip of 7 September 1867 reported that the new post office was completed and would be open for business on 9 September 1867. The building had cost 2395 pounds, the architect was Mr W Hanson, the builders were Pett and Gray and the overseer of works was "Mr O'Mahony".

Within the building a winding staircase led to the clock tower. Wendt's of Adelaide had supplied the "fine piece of mechanism" at a "very moderate cost of about 150 pounds". the clock consisted of four dials (facing north, south, east and west) made from the "best milk white glass, 3 feet 6 inches in diameter". An interesting fact that is not mentioned in The Bunyip report is that during manufacture an error was made and on the eastern face the number four is in the place where the six should be.

The Bunyip report went on to describe how, at 4 pm on 6 September 1867, the pendulum was started and the clock struck the hour of the day for the first time. This occurred in the presence of the Mayor, Councillors, "a number of the principle (sic.) inhabitants of the town", Mr wendt and his two assistants, all of whom somehow squeezed into the small space.

After the new post office was opened in Tod Street in October 1973, the old building was occupied by various businesses and the clock mechanism was converted to electric winding. It was maintained by an Adelaide clock company which visited biennially. This was not an ideal situation as problems often arose between visits and the clock time was erratic.

During 1998 suggestions that the clock be maintained locally were made. Mr Aub Kaesler, an almost-retired watchmaker, rose to the challenge and the Corporation of the Town of Gawler accepted his offer of voluntary service to maintain the clock. During 2002, under the auspices of Council, the Clock Tower Committee was formed to restore and maintain the clock. This was not a moment too soon because in May 2002 the clock stopped due to a broken tooth on a main gear. As a result, the decision was made to completely overhaul the clock. The electric winding mechanism was dismantled during the overhaul work allowing the clock to be wound by hand. This continues to be done by members of the Clock Tower Committee on a roster system.

GAWLER TOWN CLOCK and TELEGRAPH STATION HISTORY by Don Beaty
In 1839 a German migrant, Mr. Scheibener erected the first building in Gawler. It was an Inn. This is now known as The Old Spot Hotel. In 1845 the Inn became unprofitable and lost its license and was eventually sold to Mr. Henry Calton, a new arrival in the town. He soon made the hotel the collection point for the town's mail. He was appointed the official post-master on December 31st 1841, and he arranged for a mail service between Adelaide and Gawler. This was by way of a stage-coach, which was initially driven by Mr. John Harvey, the founder of Salisbury. The coach driver was held to a tight schedule and was fined for every minute he was late. This was quite a problem because the roads were so bad that things often went wrong with the coach, which also carried passengers. If the coach were to break down, in order to get the mail through on time the driver would unhitch a horse and ride it to his destination carrying the mail. The passengers, of course, would have to wait in the coach. Under ideal conditions the coach would leave Gawler at 5 am. arriving in Adelaide at 10 am. The fare (in 1855) was ten shillings ($1) each way.

Mr. Calton soon became an imposing figure in the community, being quite involved in the early development of the town, and also by owning quite a large proportion of the
town. It must be pointed out, however, that he did the job of post-master without salary.

In 1848, the post office moved across the road to the bakery of Mr. Gozzard, who became the second Post-master. His premises were on the northwest comer of Murray Street and Walker Place. After Mr. Gozzard died, his assistant Mr. H. Dean held the position until the Post Office was moved into the new telegraph building in 1863.

It was in 1857 that the telegraph wires were introduced into Gawler and the first telegraph office was set-up in the Globe Hotel (presently the "Kingsford Hotel").

The first operator was a Mr. Lewis, followed by Mr. David Sands when the Telegraph office was re-located to a room of the Gawler Implement Company. An official Telegraph Station was built in Murray St., constructed of local stone, and opened on the 1st. of July 1863. The Post office was also moved into the Telegraph Office. and Mr. W. Rossi was the first official Post and Telegraph Officer.

It is interesting to note that in 1866, a signal was set up to announce the arrival of overseas mail and that was the firing of a cannon by Dr. Popham, whose home was situated on the hillside over-looking the town.

At about this time a parcel of land fronting Murray Street, measuring 65 1/2 feet with a depth of 175 feet (towards High Street), was bought from Mr. Robert Milne for 15 pounds per foot frontage - 982 pounds and ten shillings - to be used for the building of Gawler's first official post office, which was to also incorporate the telegraph office.

The Post Office building was contracted to be built by a local company 'Pett and Gray' for a price of 2395 pounds. The telegraph office became the mail coach driver's residence, and later the school of mines, the Gawler adult education centre, and is now the Gawler Branch of the National Trust, housing a museum of local history.

On February 6th, 1867, a committee was formed to arrange the purchase and installation of a town clock. The council imposed a levy on ratepayers of 3 pence in the pound, to raise the required funding. The clock was in place and ready to go on September 6th. , 1867. It was supplied and installed by Wendt's Jewellers of Rundle Street, Adelaide, at a cost of 150 pounds. Research suggests that the council got a good price because the clock was "in stock" due to the previous customer going bankrupt before it was installed. The four dials were of the best quality milk glass, three feet-six inches in diameter facing north, South, east and west.

An interesting point is a mistake, during manufacture, on the eastern face, which shows (in Roman Numerals) a four where the six should be. On the afternoon of 6th of September 1867, the Mayor of Gawler and a number of councillors and invited guests joined Mr.
Wendt and two of his assistants in the clock tower. No mean feat considering the confined space available. A few minutes before 4pm the 4 pendulum was set in motion and the clock first struck the hour at 4pm.

The party then strolled across the road to the Globe Hotel to toast the clock with champagne and cheers and congratulations all round, particularly to the clock tower committee.

For a number of years all went well, but it is worth noting that on Sunday 28th of July,
1878, fear was expressed from a number of older women who felt the end of the world was being heralded when the clock struck one hundred
times!

The clock is powered by two weights suspended on cables wound on drums attached to the clock mechanism. These cables have to be wound once a week.

On The 28th of February 1878 Sir Charles Todd made the first telephone call between Gawler and Adelaide as an experiment. This was made a permanent feature on
19th of February 1889, with three telephone subscribers in Gawler, these being Harris and Sons, the Albion Mills, and James Martin. By 1891 this had grown to 9 - including the Police station, May Brother's foundry, and Dr. Popham, the Railway Telegraph office, Gilbert & Co. and Pierce Wincey & Co. The fee was 25 pounds per year.

In 1939 a repeater station was built at the rear of the post office and in 1956 the exchange was converted from magneto telephones to central battery and then to automatic and STD on the 15th. of May 1968.

In October of 1973, the post office and clock tower parted company when the new post office was opened in Tod Street, built on the site where well known Gawler photographer, P.J.Marchant's home had been situated.

After the new Post Office was opened the old building was used by various businesses
(including the Gawler Tourist Information Centre- before their new building was erected on Lyndoch Rd.)

The clock mechanism was converted to electric winding and was maintained with biennial visits by a company called Adelaide Clock and Parts Supplies. This, however, was not an ideal situation as problems often arose between visits and the clock time was quite erratic.

During 1998 an article in the "Cit" section of the Bunyip suggested that it would be a good idea, and, much better, if a Gawler person were available to regulate the clock. This was picked up by local resident Steve Kaesler who thought his father would fit the bill quite well and wrote to the paper to "dob him in". His father is Aub Kaesler, a soon to be retired watchmaker.

On the 15th. of September 1998 Mr. Kaesler Snr. wrote a letter to the Gawler council offering his services as a volunteer to help with the Town Clock. They answered, saying that the clock was under a maintenance contract, and his letter would be kept on file. It was six months later that a letter arrived in his mailbox from the council asking if he would consider regulating the clock. Upon closer inspection it was evident that the mechanism required some running repairs to be carried out. These were done by Mr. Kaesler who then continued to maintain the clock.

At Mr. Kaesler's suggestion a clock tower committee was once again formed, this time not to buy and install the clock, but to maintain and restore it (and the clock tower as a whole) back to its former glory.

The first meeting of the new committee was held in the council chambers on Wednesday March 13th. 2002. The committee consists of Aub Kaesler- caretaker, Sheila Willox - Gawler Council, Bob Clinch- secretary, Ian McDonnell - photography/historian, with Paul Modra, Colin Holbrook and Norm Tregenza as the clock winders. This committee is known as “The Friends of The Clock Tower".

In May of 2002 the clock stopped due to a broken tooth on a main gear, which required the complete dismantling of the gear case. As a result of this breakdown it was decided to completely overhaul the clock. This work was done predominantly by Aub Kaesler with the help of the new committee. The project took six months and was completed in November 2002. The work included disconnecting the less than satisfactory electric winder, to allow the clock to be again wound by hand, on a roster system by the clock winders.

Chairperson Brian Thom's 2012 AGM Address
GHT Inc AGM 5th July 2012 Chairman’s address<br />

Nine months ago, the contemplation of writing an AGM Chairman’s report was not on the horizon, yet it is done now with great pride and pleasure. What a great deal has been achieved in that time: Gawler History Team created, GHT being now an Incorporated body, many thousands of old pictures gathered, and a sufficient number of articles created to justify a launch of the Wiki on 27th May. We acknowledge the expertise and effort of Darren Peacock who has created the “nowandthen” programme which we have taken up. Thank you for your patience and support Darren.<br />

The Launch date and format was very timely and to have 150 people in attendance was a real plus, with lovely positive vibes emanating from the event. The happiness continued over snacks and drinks at The Southern, where many of the Team gathered to celebrate our achievement.<br />

It is always a bit dangerous to single out any particular member of any Team, but I would be remiss not to acknowledge the magnificent effort and contribution Nicole Stomaci has given to fast-track the creation of our Wiki.
Nicole, you are a gem and I am confident that all Team members would echo the thanks and appreciation now given.<br />

What I am proud of is the lovely mix of people we have, who are enjoying “doing their bit” to progress the project.
Some will always do more than others, but that doesn’t matter, as every contribution is important.<br />

The challenge we have for the next 12 months is to capitalize on what we have so-far accumulated, so that every week, our audience can see what new sets have been added so that they too can appreciate our discoveries and efforts. What we need to do now is to re-assess our priorities and focus on those sets of pictures that can now be outsourced to Wiki.<br />

Thank you all for being a Team member wanting to “do their bit” and I trust that you will get much satisfaction out of seeing your efforts “up on the big Wiki screen” over the forthcoming 12 months.<br />

It has been a great pleasure to be your inaugural Chairman.

Brian Thom<br />

Chairperson Brian Thom's 2013 AGM Address
Gawler History Team’s first full year has been very fruitful; with increasing membership, great guest speakers and interest in our Wiki project ever increasing within our community. I would like to thank your Executive Team of Deputy Chair Nicole Stomaci, Secretary Anne Richards, and Ian McDonnell, Robert Laidlaw and Stan Roulston for their great support to me and their guidance toward our project development. I thank Raff Stomaci for his role as Treasurer.<br />

Circumstances have sadly arisen which have forced Stan not to continue on the Executive and we wish him and Iris well for the future. Stan has intimated that he will continue to submit copy and photographs for the Bunyip to publish each week and we thank him for his past and future valuable PR contributions. Paul Barnet has taken nearly five hundred photos of Gawler’s heritage homes and his work ethic to enhance our Wiki has been inspiring. Many thanks Paul. <br />
I also thank Editors Rob McLean (Bunyip) and Graham Fischer (Barossa Herald) for their willingness to advertise the details relating to each monthly guest speaker, as submitted each month.<br />

We have been blessed with the co-operation from a great array of talented and interesting guest speakers:<br />
August 2012 Helen Hennessy<br />
September 2012 Robert Laidlaw, Helen Wilmore and John Clift, <br />
October 2012 Michael Pilkington, <br />
November 2012 Pauline Payne, <br />
December 2012 Dr Bruce Eastick, <br />
January 2013 Stan Roulston, <br />
February 2013 Douglas Alexander, <br />
April 2103 Bob Fielke and <br />
June 2013 Aub Kaesler. <br />
In February 2013 Nicole explained our Wiki and in May 2013 we hosted a very enjoyable 75 question quiz night compiled and conducted by Ian McDonnell.<br />

Darren Peacock’s role as our technical guru is always valued and we thank him for his ongoing efforts to maximise the effectiveness of GHT’S Wiki and Flickr; albeit him being frustrated in recent months while expecting his service providers to respond more professionally. Darren has taken steps to greatly improve our Wiki’s effectiveness, and readability.<br />

I have been constantly mindful that Nicole’s (almost daily) wonderful dedication to her role (of inputing all the material submitted) has been overwhelming at times. I am adamant that she needs support; by her having a reliable 2IC. Recruiting steps have been taken that, hopefully, will soon reduce her workload, as well as creating an effective back-up person for her. <br />

We will continue to undertake all the Team’s business matters through monthly Executive meetings so that at our monthly Team meetings we can enjoy interesting guest speakers, blended with workshops.<br />

As to the future, 2014 will be Gawler’s year 175, and I envisage that even greater interest will be experienced relative to our history. As such, I urge every member to make the most of the next 6 months to make the effort to ensure that our thousands of Flickr photographs have an appropriate article produced so that they may be properly attached to our Wiki. This 175-year of celebration for Gawler gives us the opportunity to further enhance our advertising of the Wiki’s existence.<br />
I will be seeking greater business sponsorship for the site so that we have the money to effectively increase our communication to the public.<br />

I thank my wife Bev for her great support in providing biscuits/cakes etc for our Executive and Monthly general meetings.
Thank you all for making this year very special.
Brian Thom, Chairman, Gawler History Team Inc

Chairperson Brian Thom’s 2014 AGM Address - Thursday 7th August
Gawler History Team’s second full year’s growth has been a joy to behold; with increasing membership and excellent guest speakers - having an average of about 48 at meetings (the record monthly attendance number was 60). Interest in our Gawler History website is ever-increasing within our community.

We appreciate our technical expert and guiding light, Darren Peacock (Sweet Technology), who has advised that in the 2013/14 financial year we got 16,000 visits to our website from 11,550 individuals, with over 1.2 million hits to our Flickr; up 93% from last financial year.

I would like to thank your Executive Team of Deputy Chair Nicole Stomaci, Secretary Anne Richards, and Ian McDonnell, Robert Laidlaw, Paul Barnet and Mike Denison for their great support to me and their guidance toward our project development. Sad to hear that Anne Richards is not standing for re-election as Secretary. Thank you for your input from the Team’s inception, Anne. Your counsel has been most valuable and you will be sorely missed.
I thank Raff Stomaci and now Michael Denison for their role as Treasurer, and Lance Hatcher, our honorary Auditor.
Nicole’s input to our website has continued to be invaluable and Helen Clark has thankfully volunteered to take on Nicole’s role following the Stomaci family decision to tour Australia for 6 months. We thank Helen for her enthusiasm, following her spending 3 months organising Willaston history; with a very commendable outcome.

Stan Roulston continues submitting copy and photographs for the Bunyip to publish and we thank him for his valuable PR contributions.

Paul Barnet has taken 760 photos of Gawler’s heritage homes and his work ethic to continually enhance our Wiki has been inspiring. Many thanks Paul. Paul was nominated for a SAHistory Council award.

Ian McDonnell has spent over 60 hours scanning our historic photographs by using our new A3 scanner; 150 or so photos are now displayed in many Gawler and Willaston business locations; being GHT’s contribution towards Gawler175 celebrations. Positive feedback has been received. Well done Ian.

I also acknowledge the tremendous contribution made by Audrey Clark and Chris Hanley who scanned all of the Gawler High School Year-books since 1933. Their volunteering to do that was much appreciated and the preservation of this Gawler history is a great achievement.

I also thank Editors Rob McLean [Bunyip], Graham Fischer [Barossa Herald] and The Leader editors for their willingness to advertise the details relating to each monthly guest speaker.

We have been blessed with the co-operation from a great array of talented and interesting guest speakers: <br />
I have secured some Guest Speakers already for 2015 and would welcome your suggestions at any time.

2014 is Gawler’s 175th year, and I am thankful for the Town of Gawler’s co-operation by creating on its Website’s front page a “Historic photos” link to our Wiki. We will continue to undertake all the Team’s business matters through monthly Executive meetings so that at our monthly Team meetings we can concentrate on enjoying our interesting speakers.

We acknowledge the strong and valuable financial support given by our 18 Official Sponsors and we trust that they will continue with us during 2015.

Special mention is appropriate to record the magnificent assistance Keven Evans from Roseworthy has given us over the last three years.
thank you for your attendance at monthly Executive meetings and for your valuable input towards future planning.

It has been a very productive year and I have been proud to be your Chairman.

Brian Thom.

At the October 2015 AGM, Paul Webb was elected to the Executive committee. Welcome Paul.
<br /><br />

Gawler History Team Inc. Annual General Meeting - Chairman’s Address - 6th October 2016
<br />

Our 5th year as a Team has experienced great activity and productivity. A further 1600 photographs and articles have been scanned; to reach a new total of 17,600. These include historical Gawler Town Band, Baptist Church, Roseworthy College and Gawler Gumnuts Netball photos and we were fortunate to be given many Marchant’s Studio negatives relating to Gawler in the 1930’s. It is important that such gems have a safe place to be stored and be searchable by anyone in the world.<br />

We acknowledge the splendid 18 months of effort achieved by past Gawler resident and GHT member Dr John Stephenson, who, while living near Sydney, has typed up 500 pages of information relating to interments in our Willaston Cemetery since 1861, together with extensive research of the family history relating to each interment. His excellent achievement has resulted in this mammoth output now being able to be displayed on our website, for anyone around the world to research. Such dedication to Gawler is to be applauded. With this and other additions this year, we now have excellent easy access to records relating to Willaston Cemetery [since 1866], Pioneer Park [1839 to 1870 Town of Gawler interments], and St Georges Anglican Cemetery interments [since 1861].<br />

Ian McDonnell has produced Gawler History Team business cards for members to have in their wallet to pass on; encouraging people to explore our website. Ian has diligently produced a collection of 1000 Gawler photos that are stored on a USB as a slide-show. Many such USB’s have now been given freely to all of the Gawler and District Aged Care facilities, some hairdressers, Dentists etc, so that the photos are shown on their TV sets for their patrons to enjoy. Aged Care nurses are experiencing positive reactions from the people they care for.<br />

Assisted by Robert Laidlaw, Paul Barnet has collected many historic photographs relating to the Gawler Show for presentation to the Show Committee, while they celebrate their Show’s 160th year. Gawler History Team has continued to support both the Gawler Show and the Rotary Village Fair by having a stand to explain the existence of our website.<br />

Several GHT members have commenced scanning of the massive collection of Gawler’s historic material compiled by GHT member Bev Burke over many years. This is a massive project which will result in the ability for all to see many articles and photos that may have become lost to Gawler.<br />

We appreciate teenager Pria Rusby’s ongoing effort to type out the details of all of the Gawler Dentists over our 176 years; extensively researched by GHT member Dr. Tony Jackson and excellently presented to us by him at a meeting last year. This project is nearly completed and the many pages of information will be eventually placed on our website.<br />

Lorraine Waters has been very active to place Gawler’s history on Facebook and we thank Lorraine for her ongoing commitment.<br />

We acknowledge that over the last 5 years, Nicole Stomaci has been stoic in her passion to create our website. Without the many hundreds of hours of commitment by Nicole, we would never have achieved such a magnificent end result. With circumstances changing, we have been conscious of the need to recruit a 2IC for Nicole, so that many hundreds of our photographs etc presently visible on “gawler history flickr” can be transferred to our Wiki, “gawler.nowandthen.net.au"<br />

We welcomed Paul Webb to the Executive Committee. He has selected the project to record why Gawler street names are named as they are. Your Executive have decided to give practical support to a newly-formed “Gawler Oral History Group”. We see this step as being good collaboration, so that together we can expand Gawler historic material for the world to enjoy.<br />

We have appreciated the financial support from our 14 Corporate Sponsors and are delighted that every one of the 14 has chosen to continue their support for the next 18 months, and to also have Garner Memorials on board, following their request to support us financially. Our new projector is working well, as is our new microphone that is placed within a headband for the Guest Speaker to use. We have been blessed by the contributions made by our monthly Guest Speakers who have been so positively receptive to pass on their great stories. Special thanks go to …<br />
We are experiencing an average of well over 50 being present to hear our Guest Speaker, peaking at 106 at our February meeting. We thank the Zion Lutheran Church for the use of their excellent Hall for our meetings and “She’s Apples” for creating the lovely baskets which we present to our Guest Speakers. Our Auditor Lance Hatcher has been impressed with the excellent GHT book-keeping done by Treasurer Michael Denison. Your attention to detail and professionalism is much appreciated Michael. I thank the Executive team for their support. We have had many monthly meetings at my home which have produced positive input and vision so that we constantly strive for improvement.<br />

“History is made by the people who turn up” is an appropriate statement in relation to our Team of well over 100 financial members.<br />

It gives me great pleasure to present this report to you on our achievements and activities over the last 12 months.<br />

Gawler History Team Inc. Annual General Meeting 5th October 2017 Chairman's Address
I am proud to say that our 6th year as a Team has produced many good outcomes. Firstly, thanks go to your Executive: Vice-Chairman Paul Webb, Secretary Ray Hicks, Treasurer Michael Denison, and Executive members Paul Barnet, Ian McDonnell, Robert Laidlaw and Margaret Howse (elected at last AGM) who have met each month to express their vision towards positive development of the GHT. When Nicole Stomaci retired at last AGM, her husband Raff Stomaci has taken over to perform the technical duties needed for our website, and we thank Raff for his input.

We were delighted that every one of our Sponsors chose to continue their 18 month Sponsorship and we were appreciative of Garner Memorials wishing to be included as a Sponsor.

Over the last 12 months we have scanned and loaded many newspaper clippings from Bev Burke’s extensive collection. We thank Bev for sharing these articles and Stan Roulston and Paul Webb for scanning them. These images and many photographs have totalled approximately 2,500 additions for the year; to bring our current total to over 20,250 Gawler images on our website content.

We thank Lance Hatcher for his past services as our Auditor and thank Pauline Murray for taking over as our Auditor.
We were saddened to learn of the passing of GHT member Philip Tow and we pass onto Margaret our thanks for Philip’s past contributions and our sincere sympathy. Mrs Frisby was a regular attendee at our meetings and her passing was a sad event. Our commiserations go to Roger and Pauline and family.

Members enjoyed attending our stand at the Rotary Village Fair which generated much community interest.

Our site has been substantially improved by the scanning and loading of the St. Georges Anglican Cemetery Gawler interment details from the 134 pages covering all of the interments between 1861 and 2016. We were then delighted that Trinity College students enthusiastically supported us by their taking of over 600 photographs of each Head-stone/Memorial there. These actions have meant that, together with our extensive details encompassing the old Town of Gawler cemetery in Pioneer Park and last year’s 500 pages of Willaston Cemetery interments [having a head-stone], our site can now provide great help to anyone in the world who wants to investigate their family history in Gawler. We have been delighted that the Town of Gawler website relating to Gawler’s Cemeteries has been substantially improved and we applaud the excellent collaboration given to us and our website by Henry Inat, the CEO of the Town of Gawler and Town of Gawler's IT Manager Slava Grigoriev.

We thank Ian McDonnell for spending a great deal of time over the last 12 to 18 months in the pre-production of our new “Welcome to historic Gawler” publication, and thanks also to Adrian Shackley for his substantial positive input. Mayor Karen Redman launched the book on 21st September and we have successfully negotiated for it to be available for sale at the Gawler Visitor Information Centre at 2 Lyndoch Road, as well as it being available from the excellent publisher - Bunyip Print.

We have started to have a positive relationship with the Gawler Oral History Group which has prospects for a mutually beneficial outcome.

Our December meeting/social evening has been changed to a “Show and Tell” with the invitation for each member to display an interesting item from their home or personal collection. Much interest was generated from these presentations; this becoming the theme for each future December meeting.

Our very efficient Treasurer Michael Denison has reluctantly chosen not to continue in this position and we thank Mike for his positive contribution to GHT as Treasurer.

We have now scanned every available “Year Book from Gawler High” and this site is now in the top 3 sites for popularity on our website.
