A businessman and politician in the colony of South Australia from 1840s to 1860s , one of the promoters of the Murray River Steam Navigation Company.

Formerly Chief Secretary of South Australia, Mr. Younghusband had been a director of the Bank of Australasia, and retired from the South Australian Legislative Council in Feb. 1861

From the trading floors of early Adelaide to the untamed scrub of the Para River, the story of William Younghusband is the tale of a man who not only witnessed the birth of South Australia he helped shape it.

Younghusband was an influencer as South Australia transitioned to self-governance, when he stepped into the political arena – elected to the Legislative Council, the later was Chief Secretary of SA from 1857-60.

During his time at the absolute peak of colonial politics, major infrastructure decisions were made, including the critical expansion of the northern railway line toward Gawler and Kapunda.

When local pioneers were lobbying for the railway to unlock the wealth of the north, Younghusband was in the halls of power ensuring the wheels of progress kept turning.

As Chief Secretary, Younghusband's signature was on the official documents that shaped early South Australian law, infrastructure, and land grants during a crucial boom era.

It didn’t take long for Younghusband’s eyes to turn north toward the fertile, strategic lands surrounding the three rivers of Gawler. As a pastoralist and landowner in the expanding colony, he utilised the region for sheep grazing and agriculture.Purchasing Gawler Farm, or Floraville as it was known

Younghusband helped lay the literal and economic foundations of the state and through the historical passion of his family, his legacy as a merchant, politician, and Gawler district pioneer can be told.

From the trading floors of early Adelaide to the untamed scrub of the Para River, the story of William Younghusband, Esq. is the tale of a man who didn't just witness the birth of South Australia—he actively financed, politicalized, and shaped it.
Local Gawler resident and longtime business owner Julia Kennewell spends her days running a civil construction firm, but at night her deep dives into the family tree uncovered a man who was the ultimate colonial power player.
Here is the story of a nineteenth-century mogul whose ambition left an indelible mark right on Gawler’s doorstep.
But Younghusband wasn’t just a squatter; he was an elite influencer. In the 1850s, as South Australia transitioned to self-governance, he stepped into the political arena. He was elected to the old Legislative Council and later became the Chief Secretary of South Australia from 1857 to 1860.

Younghusband & Co., his family controlled extensive shipping interests, and he imported everything from English iron to fine brandy, and exported the colony's wool and copper to the world. If it moved in or out of Port Adelaide, chances are Younghusband had a hand in it. He was a visionary who understood that the lifeblood of a new colony was trade, infrastructure, and land.
It didn’t take long for Younghusband’s eyes to turn north toward the fertile, strategic lands surrounding the three rivers of Gawler. As a pastoralist and landowner in the expanding colony, he utilized the region for sheep grazing and agriculture.
