Reginald John Rudall (1885-1955), lawyer and politician, was born on 27 September 1885 at Gawler, South Australia. RJ was the eldest child of Samuel Bruce Rudall and Margaret Rudall (nee McNeil).<br /><br />
<br /><br />
RJ attended Miss Burton's Private School in Gawler from 1895 to 1896, Queen's School in North Adelaide from 1897 to 1899, and the Collegiate School of St Peter from 1900 to 1902. He then read law at the University of Adelaide (LL.B., 1906) where he won a Stow prize. He then practised law with his father at Rudall & Rudall and in the firm G. & J. Downer. On 20 April 1907 he was admitted to the South Australian Bar.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
RJ played football, cricket and tennis, and captained the Gawler Hockey Team.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
In 1908 he was awarded a Rhodes scholarship. He read at Christ Church, Oxford (B.Litt., 1911) before returning to [[Rudall & Rudall|Rudall & Rudall Lawyers]].<br /><br />
<br /><br />
On 20 January 1914 he married Kathleen Clara Sutherland in the chapel of St Peter's College; they were to have two sons, John ('Jake') Glasgow (b.1920) and Peter Sutherland (b.1922).<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Prepared by several years membership of a rifle club, and service in the King Edward's Horse at Oxford, RJ enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 11 August 1915 and was commissioned on 16 December. He trained in Egypt and England, and in December 1916 joined the 50th Battalion in France. In January 1917 he was detached to the headquarters of the 13th Brigade; next month he was promoted lieutenant. Sent to London in September 1918, he was appointed assistant-director in the newly formed A.I.F. Education Service. He took charge of the London office, as a captain from January 1919, until he embarked for Adelaide in May.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
After his A.I.F. appointment terminated, RJ returned to [[Rudall & Rudall|Rudall & Rudall Lawyers]] and lectured in constitutional law at the University of Adelaide from 1920 to 1925. In July 1933 he stood as the Liberal and Country League's candidate for Barossa and was elected to the House of Assembly. As a back-bencher he was a fiscal conservative, but he supported the development of free public libraries in South Australia. RJ won the seat of Angas in March 1938.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
(Sir) Thomas Playford became premier in November 1938 and RJ was immediately elevated to the cabinet. As commissioner of crown lands (1938-44), minister of lands (1944-46), minister of repatriation (1938-46) and minister of irrigation (1938-46), he was involved in the soldier-settlement scheme in a State that bore the scars of earlier unsuccessful efforts. His credentials as a returned soldier, and his open-minded and judicious approach, alleviated criticism when bureaucratic and financial problems with the Federal government and his own department delayed the selection and purchase of suitable land. He retained warm relations with returned servicemen and became a valuable legal adviser to the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
RJ's life, however, was shattered by the deaths of his sons (Peter on the H.M.A.S. Sydney on 20 November 1941, and Jake at Buna, Papua, in December 1942). <br /><br />
<br /><br />
RJ was elected as a member for Midland in 1944. He helped to steer through a recalcitrant Legislative Council bill to control the dividend rates and share issues of the virtually monopolistic Adelaide Electric Supply Co., to set up a royal commission into, and ultimately to nationalise, the company in the form of the Electricity Trust of South Australia. Invoking protection of the people against exploitation, he endeavoured to guarantee reliable and fairly priced electricity.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
For the remainder of his career RJ served as attorney-general (from April 1946), minister of education (April 1946 to December 1953) and minister of industry and employment (from December 1953).<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Survived by his wife, RJ died on New Year's Day 1955 in Calvary Hospital, North Adelaide; he was accorded a state funeral and was buried in the A.I.F. cemetery, West Terrace.<br /><br />

In 2007 the Town of Gawler recognised RJ as a Significant Identity.<br />

Samuel Bruce Rudall, known as Bruce in his family and as Sam among his parliamentary colleagues, was born at Gawler in 1858. He was the second son and third child of John and Matilda Rudall but as his eldest brother died in 1860, Bruce was always considered to be the eldest son in the family.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Bruce was educated at Mr. Smilie's school in Gawler before attending St. Peter's College in Adelaide. Due to recurring bouts of rheumatism, Bruce left school at the age of 15 and returned to Gawler. In 1880 he was called to the Bar, having been articled to his father and to G. & J. Downer in Adelaide.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
In 1881 Bruce became a solicitor and Town Clerk of Gawler, succeeding his father John Rudall who had been appointed Stipendiary Magistrate in that year. Bruce and John remained together at Rudall & Rudall until John moved to Port Augusta in 1888.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Bruce married Margaret McNeill in 1884 and they had two children, Reginald John and Maude Bryce.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
In 1906 Bruce entered Parliament as the member for Barossa and in the following year was recognised for his service of 25 years in the position as Town Clerk. Rudall, located on the Eyre Peninsula, takes its name from Hundred of Rudall which was proclaimed on 3 February 1910 in honour of Samuel.<br /><br />

In 1914 Bruce retired from the position of Town Clerk of Gawler.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Matilda died in 1923 and subsequently Bruce married Alice Warren (nee Downer) and they lived together at 'Nara' in Stirling. Bruce maintained an interest in the family firm and often assisted his son RJ at busy times.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Bruce died in 1945 aged 86.<br /><br />
<br /><br />

John Rudall was born on 6 April 1820 at Exeter, England. He was educated in Paris at the College Henri Quatre and then returned to London where he was articled to a firm of solicitors.<br /><br />

John decided to leave London for Australia and he arrived in Victoria in 1853. John proceeded to Ballarat. Having had no success on the goldfields, John decided to return to England but was persuaded by a friend to go to South Australia to join the law firm of Messrs. Cullen and Wigley. John travelled to Adelaide and married Matilda Bryce Bruce at St Mary's Church, Sturt on 10 October 1854 and he settled soon afterwards in Gawler where he established a legal practice, [[Rudall & Rudall|Rudall & Rudall Lawyers]].<br /><br />
<br /><br />
John and Matilda had ten children who were educated in Gawler for some years before going to schools in Adelaide. John and Matilda's house in Gawler, called 'Bonhay' after his childhood home in Exeter, was situated near St. George's Church.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
John was active in the movement that led to the severance of Gawler from the District Council of Barossa West and its incorporation as a municipality. When the Gawler Corporation was established in 1858, John was appointed town clerk but continued his occupation as solicitor, carrying out both duties for 23 years. Upon relinquishing his connection with the corporation in 1881, John was appointed Stipendiary Magistrate to coincide with the opening of the Cowan Street Courthouse. He continued to preside over the courts of the district until 1889 when he was transferred to Port Augusta in succession to the late Mr Wigley.<br /><br />

John Rudall was born in April 1820 at Exeter, Devonshire where he commenced his education which he finished in France. He then returned to London where he was articled to a firm of solicitors.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
John decided to leave London for Australia and he arrived in Victoria in 1853. John proceeded to Ballarat where he resided for some time but within a year he moved to Gawler where he established a legal practice, Rudall & Rudall Lawyers.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
When the Gawler Corporation was established in 1858, John was appointed town clerk but continued his occupation as solicitor, carrying out both duties for 23 years. Upon relinquishing his connection with the corporation in 1881, John was appointed Stipendiary Magistrate to coincide with the opening of the Cowan Street Courthouse. He continued to preside over the courts of the district until 1889 when he was transferred to Port Augusta in succession to the late Mr Wigley.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
John was a member of the Freemasons' Lodge, Gawler and had occupied all the chairs in the order. John was a linguist and a fluent speaker of Italian and French.<br />

John Rudall's son, Samuel Bruce Rudall, took over both the legal firm and the position of Town Clerk (1881-1914) and was a State MP for the local area from 1905-1915. Samuel's son Reginald (RJ) became a Rhodes Scholar in 1908 later joining the legal firm and becoming State MP from 1933-1955 including seven years as Minister for Education and nine years as Attorney-General in Playford Governments.<br /><br />

The Rudall Family connection was tragically affected by the loss of both children of RJ and Kathleen Rudall, John and Peter, in action in the Second World War.
