William migrated to Gawler in approximately 1866 at the age
of 28. He married Annie Potter on 24 may 1867 at
the Bible Christian Chapel in Lyndoch, SA.
They had 11 children, all of whom were born in Gawler; Robert, John, William, Annie,
Lilli, Edward, George (Benjamin), Frederick,
Bert (Samuel Herbert), and two other boys who died at an
early age. In 1873 they bought a block of land
on Adelaide road, Gawler South (lot 156).
Possiblely, his father-in-law, a stone mason, built
them the house on the property, where William lived until his death in 1910, aged 71.
He is now burried in the Willaston cemetery with his wife,
Annie Rusby(Nee Potter), who died on July 26, 1913, aged 69.
Although a miller by trade, it's believed he spent a lot of time
working in a foundry in Gawler (Probably May Brothers).

Robert, the first son of William and Annie, was born on 15 March, 1868. He worked for Mr. Hobart in Gawler as a carpenter, and also drove the horse and tram between Murray street and Gawler South Station. He lived on Adelaide road and married Anne Hillier, but the marriage was not blessed with any children. Robert was a member of the Salvation Army, and passed away on 21 January, 1946, where he was laid to rest in the Willaston cemetery with his wife, Anne.

John was the second child, and was born on 16 September, 1871. (Refer to John Rusby for more information.)

The third born child was William was born on 11 January, 1874. He operated the Rusby and George grocer shop in Gawler, in the position of what is now the Arcade leading to the Dr Deland consulting rooms. He later branched out on his own on the corner of Murray and Jacobs streets, which is now an Optus store. The business was later carried on by his son, Max. He lived on the Gawler blocks road, and his marriage to Fannie (nee McClaren) was blessed with five children. He died on 30 April, 1934, and was laid to rest with his wife in the Willaston cemetery.

Annie Elizabeth, born 2 March, 1876, was the fourth child. At age 21, she married Tom Chirgwin, who was said to have fossicked for gold in the Barossa Gold Fields. Their marriage was blessed with four children. Annie died on 10 October, 1960, at age 84, and is also burried in the Willaston cemetery.

Ada Lillian, their fifth child, was born on 14 April, 1878. She married Arther William Morrow, and their marriage was blessed with two girls. Their family lived in Gawler South, and Arther was a carpenter at May Bros. Foundry. Lilli died at age 85, on 18 June, 1963, and was burried in the Willaston cemetery.

Edward was the sixth child, born on 10 April, 1880. He lived at 29 Adelaide road, Gawler South, and was a skilled blacksmith who enjoyed building model steam engines. He also served in the first World War. Although Edward was a fine man, he married three times; first to Ilfra Kempson, who left him while he was away at war, his second wife was Mrs Campbell, and his third wife was Gertrude May Peters. Upon his return from the war, he established his own blacksmith shop in Gawler. He passed away in hospital on 12 October, 1966, after a tradgic accident.

Benjamin George was born on 12 December, 1882. He was a tinsmith by trade, and worked for Mr Hammer in Gawler. In later years, he moved to work for Tailor Bros. as a tinsmith. He married Ida May Hillier, and they lived on Anglevale road, Gawler South. Their marriage was blessed with three children. George, as he was known, passed away at age 85, on 9 March, 1969. It is presumed he is also burried at the Willaston cemetery.

Frederick was born on 21 February, 1887. He was a boiler maker at the railway workshop, Islington. He married Eliza Forby, and lived on Adelaide road, Gawler South, and later moved to Anglevale road. Their marriage was blessed with three boys. Frederick was noted for his football, and was a star player for Gawler South Football Club. He died at age 77, on 30 September, 1964. He and his wife were laid to rest at the Willaston cemetery.

Born on 23 April, 1889, Samuel Herbert was William and Annie's last child. He married Mabel Thompson, and together they had five children. Bert, as he was known, was employed by the tramways and drove the electric tramcars in Adelaide. He lived at Enfield, and died on 4 September, 1930, age 41. He and his wife were laid to rest in the West Tce cemetery.
Berthold Kaesler was born to Wilhelm August Kaesler and Johanne Mathilda Elisabeth Kaesler (nee Auricht) on November 23, 1902.

He married Estella Rubina Cora (nee Milde), who was born on June 14, 1903. They were blessed with two children; Aubrey Vernon (13/08/1934), and Coral Heather (15/11/1942). Aubrey grew up to be a Watchmaker, and currently is maintaining the Gawler town hall clock, while Coral married Brenton Rusby in 1963, and spent much of her life working in Gawler chemists.

Bert lived with Cora and their children on High Street, behind their Boot Repair shop on Murray Street, Gawler (opposite the Kingsford hotel). After retiring from his boot making business, Bert worked for Matties Furniture Emporium, as a delivery driver. Later, Matties was taken over by Hoopers Furniture. Burt and his family then moved from High St. to Gozzard St., Gawler East, where he continued his shoe repairs from his home.

Bert was also heavily involved with the local football teams, working in bars (including the bar in the Gawler Golf Club, at Sandy Creek), and was renown for spending his earnings shouting people drinks.

Bert passed away on Sunday January 28, 1973, and was laid to rest in the Willaston Cemetery, later joined by his wife, Cora.
Brenton was the third child of Jack and Violet Rusby, and younger brother of Josephine Rusby (now Simcock), born on October 2, 1939. He grew up in Gawler, where he attended Gawler Primary School, and later Gawler High School.

He left school to complete an apprenticeship as an electrician with Simpsons, and once he got his electrician's licence, he was then able to operate movie projectors, as during this time carbon arc was used for lighting. This led to him working as a projectionist at Gawler Cinema, until he decided he wanted a change of scenery. Brenton then worked for WRE (Weapons Research Establishment?) for a couple of years, where he would travel to Woomera to film rocket launching, etc., and then return to Salisbury to develop the film.

It was during this period that he married Coral Rusby (nee Kaesler) on May 18, 1963, and became the first couple to ever marry in the newly-built Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gawler South (refer to Coral Rusby). As a joke, a week before his wedding Brenton's workmates decided they would chain a cannon ball to his legs, and leave him outside all day!

After some time, Brenton decided to go back and work at the Gawler Cinema, where he remained until just before it closed down in 1967. In that time he and his wife had three children; Michael in 1965, Christopher in 1966, and Tania in 1970. Brenton then worked for 20th Century Fox on Curry Street, Adelaide, where he booked all of the films out to cinemas and drive-ins in South Australia and the Northern Territory. He would also book 16mm film out to private organisations, and occasionally would bring films home to share with his family. He worked this job until the business' closure.

Brenton then worked under Dean Hutton as an Audio-Visual Technician in Salisbury, until he was asked to be the South Australian/Northern Territory Branch Manager for Greater Union Film Distributors. He did this until he semi-retired after its closure. Brenton later became a member of the The Society of Australian Cinema Pioneers because of his 20+ years of service in the film industry. After some years, the Gawler Cinema opened, where Brenton began working for John Thorpe, and continued to until he fell ill.

Sadly, Brenton passed away on May 28, 2005, and was laid to rest in the Willaston Cemetery.
Coral was born on November 15, 1942, at Doctor Dawes Hospital, on the corner of High St and Lyndoch Rd (now where Fasta Pasta is situated), in Gawler. For approximately 12 years she lived on High St, at the back of her father's boot and shoe repair shop which was located on Murray St (opposite the Kingsford Hotel), and later moved with her family to Gozzard St. She attended Gawler Primary and later Gawler High school (then situated on Lyndoch Rd).

At the age of 14 and a half, Coral began working at the chemist opposite Jacobs St., owned by Mr Oswald Conley (Conley's Chemist). It was here that she met Brenton, who later introduced her to a second job an usherette at the Gawler Cinema (see Brenton Rusby). In 1962, Brenton and Coral began building their first home on Trevue Ave, and in 1963 they married and moved in together.

Conley's Chemist was later taken over by Harnett and George, where she continued to work until she had her first child, Michael, in 1965. In 1966, her second child, Christopher, was born, and in 1970, her last child, Tania, was born.

Coral did home duties until all of her three children were attending school, at which time she began working again, part-time, during school hours. Later, she also worked for Bob Officer's pharmacy until she retired, at which point Brenton and her moved to Deland Ave, and travelled.

She currently works part-time delivering medicine for Terry White chemist in Gawler.
Robert John Maxwell Rusby, commonly called Jack, was born in Gawler on December 7, 1905. His mother, Mary, died when he was 12 years of age. After leaving school at the age of 14, he obtained a position at May Bros. Foundary as an apprentice moulder and remained with the firm until closure at the beginning of The Depression. During the Great Depression, in 1932 Jack obtained temporary work as a moulder at Mason and Cox, Ford and Downs, and Perry's Engineering in Adelaide, but also sought employment wherever possible, such as stooking wheat, etc. He also obtained a casual position showing films in Gawler, beginning at the Open Air Theatre at the top of Murray street-Lyndoch road intersection, and continuing right through to the Regal Theatre. The theatre late became Hoyts Ozone Theatre.

At the age of 24, Jack married Violet Croft in St George's Anglican Church, Gawler, on January 8, 1930. The marriage resulted in three children being born, Josephine Mary, Judith (who died shortly after birth), and Brenton Maxwell.

Eventually, Jack found full-time employment with the South Australian Railways on the Relay Gang, moving ovver the state relaying. He later became based at the North Gawler Maintenance Gang, and working his way up to the position of Ganger. He retired from the Ozone Theatre in 1956, when it was taken over by Hoyts, and full-time projection staff were introduced, and in December, 1970, he retired from the railways with approximately 38 years service.

On 20 November, 1976, Jack passed away at the Hutchinson Hospital after suffering a heart attack, and was laid to rest in the Willaston Cemetery, with Violet being buried with him later.

On 20 November, 1976, Jack passed away at the Hutchinson Hospital after suffering a hear attack, and was laid to rest in the Willaston Cemetery, with Violet being buried with him later.
John Rusby, the second son of William Rusby, was born on 16 September, 1871. As a young man he was evidentally a handful, and was sent to his Grandfather's residence at Yongala where he worked as a boundary rider. Here he met Mary McCormack, as she was the daughter of Michael McCormack, the manager of the station. John travelled 30 miles to Old Canowie Station to court her, and they were married on the station on April 18th, 1900. They then moved to Gawler where they lived on Adelaide road. Mary died on the 15th January, 1917, at the early age of 39, leaving four children for John to care for.

Born in 1901, Clarence Edward was the first child of John and Mary, but sadly died from appendicitis in 1909. They also had four more children; Kathleen Mary Doreen (Mrs Zerna) (1903-1987), Robert John Maxwell (1905-1976), Florence (Mrs Cooper) (1907-1933), and Melva Francis Clare (Mrs Parnell) (1911-2004).

The story of how John and Mary met was rather humerous; John was walking down the street when approached by Mary, who was evidently a Salvation Army member at that time. She asked, "Brother, how is your soul?", to which John replied as he lifted his shoe, "Fine, sister, how's yours?". She replied, "I didn't mean that soul, I mean your other soul.", to which John lifted his other shoe and said, "Oh, that's fine, too, sister.".

John had a long and varied life, droving sheep across the Murray into Victoria, driving a covered wagon interstate, working on Rigg's property in Gawler, and later he operated the stationary steam engine at May Bros. Foundary. The love of horses always remained with him, and he would take Brenton Rusby, his grandson, rabbiting with his ferrets, and blasting trees on Rigg's property in his horse and buggy, which he still had well into old age.

Following an accident between a car and his horse and buggy, his health slowly declined, and he passed away on 16 October, 1952, at the age of 81. He was laid to rest in the Willaston cemetery with his wife, and his young son, Clarrie.
working in a foundry in Gawler (Probably May Brothers).

Robert, the first son of William and Annie, was born on 15 March, 1868.
