Description:
Current Centrelink site on the corner of High Street and Calton Road - according to Bev Burke's research the block was originally 2 acres [evidently belonging to Gov. Gawler] and a M. Harris built a house there including a ballroom. In 1920 a Mr Matz bought the house and converted the coach-house into a bakery. He died in 1963 and his grand-daugheter Marie Anders inherited the property and lived there until 1978. The property was then bought by Fairdeal Motors intending to develop the site but Council prevented this happening. It then remained empty, was vandalised and eventually demolished. Centrelink was then built there. This street has homes and buildings within it that are in Town of Gawler Local or Contributory heritage list. *[[High Street 2]] *[[High Street 4]] Please [http://www.flickr.com/photos/gawler_history/sets/72157629521510358/ click here] to see photos of High Street Gawler.
