Description:
In May 2017 Peter Russell addressed the Gawler History Team regarding the restoration of Gawler's 330 Stone walls. The video of Peter's address is shown below. <br /> Please [http://www.flickr.com/photos/gawler_history/sets/72157629112655851/ click here] to see photos of various stone walls around Gawler. A great reference to Gawler's stone walls is contained within the Gawler Council publication “Historic Walls in the Public Environment, Gawler, SA – Conservation Strategy September 2007”. [Extracted with permission from McDougall & Vines HISTORIC WALLS IN THE PUBLIC ENVIRONMENT, GAWLER SA CONSERVATION STRATEGY 2007 report]. This document catalogues walls of historic importance in the Council area, identifies common construction and management problems, and suggests some of the best and cost effective methods of repairing, maintaining and preserving these walls. The cost of repairing them correctly is often beyond the means of the property owners. The development of Phoenix Plaza, did however result in the extensive repair of the stone wall on the northern side of the property on Calton Road. In 2016 there was a wonderful outcome of remediation of the wall at 25 High Street. In 2019 the wall at 35 High Street was completely destroyed. We look forward to some appropriate restitution.
