Mr. A. J. Davis
Another former resident of Gawler Mr. Alexander Joel Davis, died in a private hospital in Adelaide at the age of 76. When Mr. Davis retired from the land he went to reside in Cowan Street, Gawler, and served a term as a member of the town council. When his family scattered he left Gawler for Adelaide. Members of the family who survive are Mr. Stan Davis, Mesdames I. F. Pederick, L. E. Kennett. K. V. Day, and Miss K. Davis. 1
Mr. A. J. Davis
Mr. Alexander Joel Davis, who died on July 5, was born at Riverton on March 5, 1864. His farming activities covered the districts of Salter's Springs, Giles Corner, and later he bought back the property on which he had been born. He lived in the Riverton district for 44 years, during which time he took an active interest in all public matters. In 1909 Mr. Davis removed to Ward's Belt, Gawler, where he purchased a larger property, later retiring and serving as a councillor in Gawler. He was also closely associated with the Agricultural Bureau, Public School Advisory Committee, District Trained Nursing Society, and was a member of the Foresters' Lodge for 60 years, and was a prominent bowler. He settled in St. Peters, where he joined up with the St. Peters Bowling Club. Mr. Davis was a member of the Australian team that toured New Zealand in 1928. Three years ago he removed to Toorak Gardens, where he became a member of the Toorak Bowling Club. He was closely associated with the Methodist Church. He is survived by a son, Mr. S. C. Davis (Mayor of Mount Gambier), Mrs. J. Pederick, Angle Vale; Mrs. L. E. Kennett, of Toorak Gardens; Mrs. K. V. Day, of Norton's Summit; and Miss K. Davis, of Toorak Gardens. 2
