William Knibbs arrived in Gawler around 1857, when he was about 20 years old, having come across from England aboard the ship ‘Carnatic’.[1] In 1864 he married Elizabeth Lienert, a widow with an infant son, in St George’s ‘New Church’, Gawler. (Elizabeth also English born, had met and married her first husband in Hahndorf, but he died within the year, leaving her and 2 month old son Charles behind).
The couple made their home at Willaston, William working as a labourer;[2][1][3] they welcomed 11 more children, 9 of whom survived to adulthood (see details below).
Elizabeth died “somewhat suddenly” in 1894, aged 51, leaving behind a “large family”,[4] (although most of the children were grown by that time). William survived her by 12 years, dying in 1907, aged 71; the Bunyip (12 Jul 1907) described him as “a very old resident of the town, having lived in the vicinity of Gawler for over fifty years” and “for over fifty years a member of the I.O. Oddfellows, Manchester Unity.”[5] Elizabeth and William are buried together at Willaston Cemetery.
Note: it has been suggested that Elizabeth Knibbs was the owner of the Redbanks Road lime kilns and the cottage at 4 Princess Street Willaston, both of which are recorded to have been purchaed by 'Elizabeth Lenert' in 1895. Whilst 'Elizabeth Knibbs' was 'Elizabeth Lienert', for the brief time between her first and second marriages, that was much earlier from 1862-1864, and Elizabeth Knibbs died in 1894 before the land transfers. The 'Elizabeth Lenert' who owned to lime kilns and cottage was actually Elizabeth Knibb's daughter in law, wife of son Charles Lienert/Lenert (spelling of the surname varies between records).
