The Gawler Catholic Mission began with the appointment of two English Cistercian Monks – Frs Norbert and Wolfrey, by Bishop of Adelaide, Doctor Murphy – and they arrived in Gawler in August 1848 from Tasmania. These priests set about collecting funds for a church and people responded generously, and in April, 1850, the Bishop assisted by the Vicar General, Dr Bachans, laid the foundation stone of the first Sts Peter & Paul’s Church. The church was duly opened in 1855.
