John Allen was born in England, he married Elizabeth Mankey (daughter of James Mankey and sister of Cr Thomas Johns Mankey), in Cornwall in 1845. The couple and other members of the Mankey family migrated to South Australia in 1848.
He represented South Ward as Councillor between 1879 to 1880.[1]
John's wife Elizabeth died in Gawler in 1873, aged 50, and is buried in Willaston Cemetery in a Mankey Family plot (5 A 1) alongside her brother Thomas Mankey (4 A 1). John remarried widow Mary Ann Roscrow (nee Mary Ann Martin, daughter of William Martin) the following year; when she died in 1888 she was buried at Willaston with first wife Elizabeth. He remarried for a second time. The plot must have been full by the time John died on 1 Aug 1894, he has his own plot in Willaston Cemetery (plot 37 A 1).
His obituary in the Evening Journal (3 Aug 1894)[2] read: "THE LATE MR. JOHN ALLEN. On Wednesday, August 1, a well-known identity of Gawler passed away in the person of Mr. John Allen. The deceased gentleman arrived in South Australia in 1848, and in the same year went to Gawler and entered the employ of Mr. (now the Hon.) James Martin. A year or two later he entered into partnership with the late Mr. T. J. Mankey, and carried on the business of machinists at Gawler. After a visit to the Victorian diggings the business was resumed by the two gentlemen and carried on for some years. When a dissolution of partnership took place the late Mr. Allen continued the business, and did a large trade until he retired some ten or twelve years ago. The deceased gentleman was at one time a member of the local Town Council, and was a trustee of the Wesleyan Church for twenty years. He was also one of the oldest Oddfellows of the town. He was seventy-two years of age at the time of his death, and leaves a widow (who was his third wife) but no family."
