Rita Argent was born on 16 August 1931 at the Hutchinson Hospital Gawler when her family was living at Wasleys.

She attended the Wasleys Primary School and Riverton District High School.
On completion of her High School Education she completed two years training in General Nursing at the Hutchinson Hospital Gawler and a further two years at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
She later gained her Certificate in Midwifery at the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital Rose Park South Australia.
As a Nursing Sister, Rita served on the staff of Hutchinson Hospital Gawler and Hamley Bridge Memorial Hospital.
She was also Tutor Sister at Hutchinson Hospital Gawler and Kapunda Hospital.
In 1977 Rita founded the Gawler Care and Share Group a day care activity for frail and ageing people and younger people with a disability and served as co-ordinator for thirty three years, prior to retiring in 2010. The organisation commented "Rita ran a well groomed team of volunteers and staff for many years and her legacy is cemented in everything we do. Rita had a love for people to remain socially connected from the Gawler and surrounding areas."[1]
In 1985 she received a Gawler Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award for her contribution to Gawler Care and Share Group.
In 2003 she received the Centenary of Federation Medal awarded by the Australian Government for Service to the Community.
Rita spent several years as Staff worker with Nurses Christian Fellowship Australia in South Australia, which was previously named Australian Nurses Christian Movement.
She was also a Lay Preacher in the Uniting Church, South Australia.
Rita passed away on 2 August 2026, aged 94.[2]
