Broderick (Cr) Denis John

Denis John Broderick was born in about 1860, second son of Gawler’s William Broderick and nee Mary Cain and brother of Cr Nicholas Aloysius Broderick (I). During his childhood the family lived in a humble cottage they rented at Lot 49 Jacob Street (now the site of the Woolworths/Big W complex/carpark).

In 1880, 20 year old Denis was working as a grocer’s assistant for Messers J & J Wilcox Drapers, Grocers & c. and was one of the witnesses called when there was an inquest into a suspicious fire in the store sheds out the back of the business; the cause of the fire was not determined.[1]

Denis married Lucy Gent, eldest daughter of the late Walter George Gent and nee Lucy Colinette (and step daughter of Thomas Penaluna), at SS Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Gawler on 6 February 1884.[2] The couple resided at 11 King Street around 1889-1891. They did not have any children of their own but may have had an adopted daughter.

In late 1893, Denis started his own business as a wheat buyer & c. after working as an agent for the South Australian Milling Company for several years.[3] He also served Gawler as a Councillor for North Ward for two years (Dec 1894 - at least Nov 1896),[4][5][6] a member of the Institute Committee for eight years and as an officer for the Oddfellows and Hibernian Catholic Benefit Societies for several years.[7]

Denis and Lucy Broderick left Gawler for Port Adelaide in 1898,[8] where he became landlord for the Jervois Hotel in Lipson Street.[9] In November 1900, just a few years after they had left, news reached Gawler that 41 year old Lucy had died suddenly of a heart problem and even more shockingly, the following day in the mourning coach on the way to her burial, her husband Denis, was seized with a fit and also died. They were both buried at Cheltenham Cemetery.
