The heritage residence at 19 Cowan Street [Allotment 123 on the original Gawler Town Plan], facing onto Light Square, was built in 1866 as the Congregational Church Manse. Conveniently located, it was just across Light Square from the Congregational Church and Hall.
Reverend C J Evans was the first in a long line of Congregational Church ministers to reside there [see Congregational Church Light Square – for a list of ministers]. It was a substantial building from the start, attracting much higher council rates than the surrounding buildings. In 1875 the Bunyip when describing the church said “A neat parsonage adjoins the church, with half an acre of garden, also enclosed with a substantial wall.”[1]
In the 1870s it would have been a great place to buy some quality furniture and homewares – with auctions held there in 1871 and 1876 when Rev Evans and Rev McMichael respectively, sold everything and headed back to England![2][3]
Additions were made to the property over the years including the addition a dining room and bathroom in July 1883 (costing £80), a study in November 1886 and a veranda in February 1900 (costing £35).[4]
In 1972 the property was sold by the Church Trustees and became private property.[5] The allotment was subdivided in 1976, the garden portion becoming 17 Cowan Street,[5] which was subsequently built upon (in 2026 Pauline R Murray Accountants is at that site).
In 2026 the former manse at 19 Cowan Street, is being operated as “Church Hill Mews” B&B (sometimes also written “Churchhill Mews”) and has been for some years.
