Victor Hugo Deuter, his wife Louisa and their 3 children [daughters Dorothea Annie and Emily Louisa] came to Gawler to live in 1906. Their first home was in the then Union Street [now 2nd Street] but later they bought a house in Queen Street [now 4th Street] in which they lived almost all of their lives and where their 3rd child Joseph was born [in 1909?].
Victor was an Agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Company for some years.
A chance churn of ice-cream made by his wife gave him the idea of a business of his own, and another churn of ice-cream was taken out to Sandy Creek to a Sunday School picnic and sold rapidly in one penny ice-cream cups. From then on [1916] the churns grew larger and larger and his Gawler Ice-Cream Factory was established.
Business was good and tubs of ice-cream were soon being sent all over the Mid-North as far as Burra and Red Hill.
Unfortunately Mrs Deuter died in 1942 and a thriving business came to an end.
Victor Hugo Deuter died in July 1950 aged 76 years.
Victor Deuter was Councillor for Gawler South Ward from 1935 until 1939, and again from 1944 until 1946. He was also a Member the Workers Education Association and was always interested in education. He was also instrumental in forming a "Model Parliament" and many good debates on world affairs were heard there. He was also an active member of the Labour Party, as was his son Joseph who later also was elected as a Councillor.
