EY Theodor
Proprietor of the Gawler Grain and Produce Stores, Murray Street, Gawler, was born at Norwood, South Australia in 1852, and is the youngest son of the late Captain Ferdinand Ey, who came to the Province in 1849, and was connected with the Wallaroo Mines from 1861 to 1875. Upon the conclusion of his education at Mr J L Young’s school in Adelaide, the gentleman under review entered the Wallaroo office of the Wallaroo Mines as a clerk, where he remained for 14 years, until the stoppage of the mines in 1880. He then went into the wheat trade and accepted the position of accountant at the Wallaroo Mill, which position he filled for three years. In 1884 Mr Ey became accountant to the Albion Roller Mills at Gawler, and after ten years in this connection took over management of the mill at Kapunda for Darling & Son, returning to Gawler in 1896, where he opened in business on his own account at the present premises. Mr Ey has worked up a good connection and has won a high reputation for his sound business principles and upright dealing. Besides the produce business, he acts as account and commission agent.
He is agent for J S Bagshaw and Sons, windmills, and chaffcutters; for Joseph Black, Hamley Bridge; for W Thomas & Co, Port Adelaide; for the Atlas Fire and Norwich Accident Insurance Companies; F Metters & Co; and the State Machinery Co.
Mr Ey is one of the auditors for the Town Council, a member of the Institute Committee, and is prominently connected with the Order of Foresters.
He is very fond of sport, and cricketing circles bears the reputation of being the leading wicketkeeper of the district.
Mr Ey married in 1880, Jane Rebecca, daughter of the late Adolph Kastner and his family consists of three sons and three daughters, two of the sons being associated with their father in the business.
