Records show that in 1884, there was a Gawler residence, property of John Mitchell, known as 'Gowan Brae' - see below:
"DEATH. MITCHELL--On the 18th June, at his residence Gowan Brae, Gawler, after a painfull [sic] illness, John Mitchell, aged 52. A resident of Gawler for 27 years."[1]
"FUNERAL NOTICE - THE FRIENDS of the late Mr. Jno. MITCHELL are respectfully informed that his Remains will be removed from his late residence, Gowan Brae, Gawler, on Friday, the 20th inst.,
at Half-past Two, for interment in the Willaston Cemetery. TAYLOR & FORGIE, Undertakers."[1]
In 1891 P H Burden, newly elected Councillor for East Ward was residing at Gowan Brae.[2]
In 1900 Dr Minton Connell was residing at Gowan Brae, 'Off Daly Street', residence of Lieutenant Reg Rudall, while his own residence was being built.[3]
Other records, show it was still the residence of Reginald John Rudall and Mrs Rudall in 1914[4] and 1940.[5] A description in an unknown source, which seems to have been written by a friend or Reginald Rudall's son Peter (1922-1941), and includes a photo of the home, describes it as having 'an all-weather tennis court, and a full-length concrete/matting cricket pitch'.[6]
