Ethan White - Off the Couch with Ethan
“Life can only be understood backwards, but must be lived forwards.” My name is Ethan White and I am a 17 year old student, currently undertaking Year 12 at Xavier College Gawler. I have lived in and around Gawler my whole life, with my Mum, Dad and younger sister Ava. I produce, write, film, edit & present my own television program, Off the Couch with Ethan, a travel show all about trying to encourage young people and their families to get “off the couch” and out into the great outdoors, to see and experience all the amazing places our country has to offer. I have always been passionate about getting outdoors and seeing things! I have been so lucky that my family has always taken me camping, interstate and overseas. I have also always loved filming and capturing these trips away. I eventually mixed these two passions together, to produce my television show, that airs on Channel 44 and Channel 31 in Melbourne.
I really love Gawler, it’s a great community to live in. I love getting involved and checking out local events, like the Gawler Show, the Fringe, the swap meets! I was so honoured to receive Gawler’s Young Citizen of the Year last year.
Something I like to do in my spare time is collect old Apple computers. I'm not sure why, but I've had a bit of a fascination with the colourful jellybean-like iMac G3's, and managed to collect a few different colours over time. I also have a few original Macintosh's, with the floppy disk drive and all! I just like to look at them and compare them to the new iMac I use today. I think that it is a great example of progress, how far a particular industry has come in just 30 years. It really does make me wonder what things will look like in another 30 years time!
I worked at Gawler Cinema for almost 2 years, which was a really fun experience. Made popcorn at the candy bar and use to clean the entire cinema in just 4 minutes (which was as you can imagine, very messy after a school holiday session) - I have never realised how many places popcorn can get too! It was a great job and was always a lot of fun. People always ask me “how do you do all the things you do?” To be honest, I don’t see myself doing anything different to any other person. I just have a set of things that I want to do in life, so I just go out and do it. Whenever I get asked by young people for a piece of advice (and I am always so grateful to be asked that), I always say “find something you are passionate it; be it media, sport, music, a particular career, whatever. Then, go get yourself out there. We live in a world where you can share your passions with a click of button. So just get out there and do it!”
