MOZART, Harold Selig

Harold Selig Mozart was born in London (District of Clerkenwell) in the December quarter of 1849 to Joseph Mozart (b. Prussia 1818) and Mary Middlemiss (married in the District of St. Saviours, London, 1848). Joseph Mozart listed his occupation as “Missionary to the Jews”. Joseph and Mary had three children; Harold b.1849, Edward Joseph Mozart (b. Marylebone 1852) and Alexander Ernest Mozart (b. Hackney 1854).

The family left Portsmouth 25.07.1855 on the "Victoria Regia”, commanded by Capt. Edward Charlton, and arrived at Port Adelaide on 13.11.1855. Joseph found work as a tinsmith and Mary was employed as a teacher in various parts of the state. The family lived for two years in Gawler (1855 – 1857) and a fourth child, William Middlemiss Mozart, was born at Angaston 11.03.1857. On the death of Joseph Mozart (at Ebenezer, 25.02.1865), the family returned to England.

Harold returned to South Australia in 1871, leaving London aboard the “Yatala” (01.07.1871) and arriving at Port Adelaide (02.10.1871). At various times he lived in Strathalbyn, Port Augusta, Terowie, Jamestown and Adelaide. He returned to Gawler in 1887 and established a business working as a tinsmith, plumber and gasfitter. His business specialised in manufacturing acetylene gas generators and made street lights and portable lighting.

Harold married Fanny Craddock, daughter of Thomas and Eliza (nee Shepherd, m. 26.07.1855), on 23.02.1877 at Strathalbyn Wesleyan Church. They had eight children; Elsa Minna: b Strathalbyn 29.08.1878 Vincent Ernest Middemiss: b 04.09.1880, died at the age of four months Olive May: b Terowie 19.11.1881 Ive Julia: b Parkside 28.03.1885 Frederick Harold: b Parkside 04.10.1887, d 1889 Rachael Matilda: b Gawler 02.01.1888 Kate: b Gawler 25.04.1891, d 1891 aged 4 days Sybella Kathleen: b Gawler 08.11.1896, d 1897 aged 5 months Harold’s wife Fanny died 16.06.97 aged 36. Harold and three other members of his family are buried at West Terrace Cemetery.
