Principal occupation Butcher

Arthur William Johnson was working as a Butcher in Willaston when he met and married Ellen Gray on 3 December, 1873. They were married at Ellen’s parent’s residence at She Oak Log (near Gawler). Ellen was born in 1851 in Adelaide, South Australia, and daughter of Alexander Gray and Helen Jack who were pioneer farmers at She Oak Log where they cleared the land and built their own cottage.

Arthur and Ellen’s family was made up of eight children born between 1876 and 1896 - five girls and three boys one of whom was my grandfather, Alfred Edward Johnson born in 1889. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet him as he passed away in February 1950, and I was born later that year. However, from the stories I’ve heard over the years from his two sons lead me to believe he was a fine man as was Great Grandfather Arthur who enjoyed breeding dogs and showing them in the local shows. In the Sands & McDougalls South Australian Directory 1885, Arthur is listed as a Clerk working at Willaston. In the 1909 South Australian Electoral Roll, he is a Painter, living at 12 King Street Gawler. He also worked at Martin’s Foundry in Gawler.
