INDUSTRIAL CHANGE IN GAWLER

An important change in the proprietorship of industry in Gawler has recently taken place - the sale of Mr. T. Hulland's, Precision Pressed Metal factory to J. R. Holden's, of Adelaide. Mr. Hulland's factory was introduced to Gawler just prior to the war, six years ago (April 1940), the proprietor an engineer of high standard, saw opportunities of production at Gawler, when young people were at a loose end insofar as industry was concerned.

Premises were taken at the rear of Mr. J. T. Hobart's, in Reid street; and then came the war. The ‘Precision' works were detailed into production for national purposes, and throughout, the factory has employed up to 17 operators turning out all types of precision goods. For instance, one of the orders was for three million copper detonators for shells; and in larger form 45,000 steel helmets were turned out from these works. Button moulds have been a perpetual motion at the 'Precision' works, 400 boxes a month being the product, with six gross moulds in a box.

Mr. Hulland was reluctant to speak of his. abilities, but when.it is told that he made all his own tools and dies and executed some work that previously had been the despair of Commonwealth engineers, then the reader knows of his high standard in engineering.

Mr. Hulland has passed the psalmist's three score years and ten and is seeking a more leisured life; he intends to retire. He is remaining with the new firm until a new contract is got under way, viz., a cigarette lighter for the Forces to the order of the Comforts Fund. This lighter is somewhat on the American pattern, having a wind screen. The first order in this direction is 200,000 in 4 months; with possibilities of repetitive orders. Mr. Angove is the manager of the new proprietorship. He is hopeful that the works will remain in Gawler, and as an earnest of this, new machinery and extra lighting have been installed. 2
