Elizabeth Street was part of the third and final land release that formed Bassett Town, it can be seen on the 1873 Bassett Town Plan. Situated to the west of the railway line, it was a continuation of Elizabeth Street to the east of the railway line which was part of the original 1857 Bassett Town Plan.
Redistribution of boundaries in the 1930s, saw the western portion of Elizabeth Street become the boundary between the suburbs of Evanston to the south and Gawler West to the north. The original 'Elizabeth' name, which was in honour of the Bassett Family matriarch and eldest daughter who were both Elizabeth, was retained. The portion of Elizabeth Street to the ease of the railway line became Twentyfirst Street Gawler South.
