Born in 1840, in 1874, Fred May and John Felix Martin went into partnership with James Martin. Fred May's partnership involvement ended 4th March 1885. The May's lived in Sunny Brae on the corner of 15th and 16th Streets, and they owned the first car in Gawler, a Talbot.

Frederick May was elected as Gawler Councillor for South Ward 1881 to 1884.

Frederick May died in 1897.
