Grace Shim - Grace Cake House

".....Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself....." Grace is originally from Korea and came to Australia in 2005. In Korea she studied fashion but baking was always a passion. She came to Australia just for a holiday but instantly fell in love with Australia and after returning back to Korea she decided to move permanently to Australia.

"I just wanted to have a change and explore and create a new life for myself." Before moving to Gawler she had settled in Sydney and Melbourne working in such fields as retail and hospitality mostly as a cafe all-rounder. She finally came to South Australia and settled in Modbury then Freeling and finally in Gawler. Some of the hurdles she experienced when moving to Australia were such barriers as language, racism and a lack of family support.

"Moving to Gawler was so different to anywhere else and I felt really welcome and accepted." With Grace Cake House she specialises in cup cakes and macaroons, Completely affordable and all 100% home made. A new business venture for her she is concentrating mainly for the local market but hopes one day to branch out her business. She has a sweet teeth which was one inspiration for her cooking

"I wanted to feed those that I love, that is a big motivation and inspiration for me" When not baking Grace is a devoted mother of two and as a family, they enjoy visiting and walking around the many parks in Gawler. They also enjoy catching all the sights of the main street which is vastly different to the streets she grew up on in Korea. Grace is such a happy person and loves getting out in the community and meeting new people, so come say hello! Going to the gym and keeping fit and healthy are very important to Grace, although the odd cake here and there doesn't hurt 🙂 She is very keen to learn photography and has a big respect for those who enjoy the arts or have some kind of craft.

"Gawler is a leading town and people connect with each other! The whole place is very friendly and I feel accepted even though I am from Korea. It's quiet with not too many people, not compared to Korea anyway!" Want to be involved in the Humans Of Gawler project? Just comment here or send me a message. You don't have to be rich, successful, well known. Maybe you're new to area? Maybe you want to spruik your business? Maybe you just want your face plastered over Facebook.
