Caroline Anne Ward (nee Haydon)
The story below is taken from Haydon's Family History book. With thanks to Mrs. A. Campbell.-
Caroline Ann, second child and daughter secured employment as a maid at the mansion of James Martin - known today as the Trevue Nursing Home at Gawler. Later she married local lad, Morey Ward who had received some education at a private school in Willaston. At first they lived with Morey's mother before they took over a small shop in Willaston. On two occasions they shifted to other shops - the third one being purchased from a Mr. Gartrell where they conducted what came to become known as A. M Ward's green grocery store. They raised a family of five.
Caroline worshipped regularly in the Willaston Methodist Church and witnessed her faith to the family as her time with them and yet found so much time to be responsible for them. Caroline was known far and wide by a number of generations for her friendliness and generosity. Another outlet for her faith was evidenced by her marvellous commitment to hospital visitation. For 50 years she visited and distributed sweets, fruit and biscuits to patients in the Gawler Hutchinson Hospital.
One day at 86 years of age, she went on what she thought was a 'routine' visit, however on this occasion she was suprised and overwhelmed when she was presented with a beautiful opal brooch and thanked by the hospital board. it was estimated that over the 50 years she had cheered some 130,000 patients. She also often visited people in Sister Powell's Private Hospital.
In 1982 the Gawler Town Council named the parklands adjacent to the North Para River to the west of the Willaston bridge and extending along Weaver Drive, the "Caroline Ward Park". A communion tray in the Willaston Uniting Church still commemorated her involvement there. Dying in her 87th year, Caroline's body was laid to rest with her husbands in the Willaston Cemetery.
