Description: '''Patrick George Iland OAM''' I was born in Rockhampton, Qld and went to school at Christian Brothers College in Rockhampton. After school I worked at CSIRO in Rockhampton and Brisbane before moving to 12 Quarton Street, Gawler with my wife, [[Iland Judith Ann|Judith]] in 1977 to take a position in the chemistry laboratory at Roseworthy Agricultural College. Our two children Damien and Julie were born in Gawler and went to St Brigid’s primary school. We enjoyed the relaxed and sport-focused lifestyle of Gawler. I worked at Roseworthy Agriculture College from 1977 – 1991 and then at The University of Adelaide, Waite Campus after the amalgamation of these two institutions in 1990. We moved to Adelaide in 1991 to be closer to the Waite Campus. I am now retired from the university but continue my involvement with the university as a Visiting Research Fellow helping to supervise research students. My main areas of teaching and research were wine chemistry and viticulture. In 2006, I was awarded an OAM for Service to the Australian Wine Industry. Judith and I established a small book publishing business concentrating on educational wine books. We continue to write and publish wine books in my ‘so-called’ retirement and have travelled to many wine regions around the world doing research for our books and catching up with ex-students. I have listed the books that we have published as some readers will know one or more of the authors, such as John Sitters, Peter Dry, Andrew Ewart, Andrew Markides, Peter Gago, Greg Edwards, Nick Bruer and Alison Soden; either lived or still live in Gawler or in the Barossa region. I have written five books. with other lecturers and ex-students. Through our business Judith and I have self published these books. They include a set of 3 technical books that most wineries in Australia and New Zealand buy for use in their laboratories. Even though our business is small we have been successful in exporting to several countries and have agents in Canada and America. The technical books are — Chemical analysis of grapes and wine: techniques and concepts By Iland, Bruer, Edwards, Weeks and Wilkes Monitoring the winemaking process from grapes to wine: techniques and concepts 2nd Edition By Iland, Ewart, Markides and Sitters. Microbiological analysis of grapes and wine: techniques and concepts By Iland, Grbin, Grinbergs, Schmidtke and Soden in conjunction with Interwinery Analysis Group. The fourth is an educational wine book for the general public and students titled ‘A Taste of the World of Wine’ by Iland, Gago, Caillard and Dry. Our most recent book is titled ‘The Grapevine: from the science to the practice of growing vines for wine’ by Iland, Dry, Proffitt and Tyerman. More details of these books (with sample pages) are on our website [http://www.piwpwinebooks.com.au www.piwpwinebooks.com.au] We are very pleased to say that the last 2 books have won international awards from the OIV (The Official International Organisation of Wine Producing Countries) that is based in Europe. Each year they recognize outstanding books in their prospective fields. We are flying to Paris in December 2012 to accept the latest award for ‘The Grapevine’ book. I formed many friendships in the time we lived in Gawler and still keep in touch with several people from the ‘good old Gawler days’.
