Description: George Warren was elected Gawler Councillor for North Ward and Alderman in 1857. '''Taken from the Gawler Anglican Parish History 1846-1912:''' In 1895 Messrs. L.S.Burton and Geo. Warren met with a tragic death as the result of a railway accident. They had both rendered splendid service to the Church.....Mr. Geo. Warren served on many committees and his profession of Surveyor enabled him to be of most valuable assistance. Various surveys of the Church property had to be made from time to time, and his willing services were always at the command of the Vestry. George Warren replaced Frederick Foote Turner as a trustee and executor of the estate of James Fotheringham. George E. Loyau "The Gawler Handbook" [G.E.L.] pp166 and 167 "After McKinlay's death it was universally felt that something should be done to perpetuate his memory, and accordingly, meetings were held in Gawler and a Committee was formed to carry out the wish of the people - vis., that a suitable monument should be erected "to commemorate his personal worth and the services rendered by him to the colonies as an explorer." The site selected was at the terminal point of Murray-street, at its junction with Cowan-street, and adjacent to the old burial ground.
