Description: James Short was Councillor for South Ward twice; 1882 - 1883 and 1888 - 1889. James Short and family removed to Adelaide in early 1897 and a gathering was held at the Town Hall to thank him for his services to the town and wish him the best for the future.<ref>‘Gawler’ (The Advertiser 8 Feb 1897) https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/34572969</ref> For full details of the speeches and attendees see [https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/34572969 the article in the Advertiser] Three of James' Gawler born sons went on to serve and died in WWI, Arthur Gawler Short who was killed in action in Gallipoli, Edward Charles Short who died of broncho-pneumonia whilst serving in France and Henry Short who was killed in action in France. Their names are included in the memorial pavers in Pioneer Park Remembrance Garden.
