Description: Lionel Rodney Tiller was born in Mallala in 1935. The Tiller family moved to Gawler in the early 1940s, living first on Fourteenth Street, then on Twelfth Street. Rodney Tiller bought property at 16 Twentyfirst Street in 1955 from Peter Parnell, with Lance Tiller buying the property of 18 Twentyfirst Street from Mr Lacey. Lance later sold the corner block of 18 Twentyfirst Street to Rodney. Rodney got his first job at 15 working as a storeman at Century Electrics for a year. He then moved to Dulding’s Company and worked as a carpenter while picking grapes in Lyndoch on the weekends. Rodney worked for Dulding’s in Gawler for 13 and a half years from the 1940s into the 1960s and during this time he began building his home at 16 Twentyfirst Street, Gawler South. Rodney said to his parents as a three-year-old that the only thing he wanted to do in life is build his own home. This he achieved, without any loans. He built the entire home with the help of his brothers, doing all the work themselves. The only work not done by Rodney was the electrical wiring, which was completed by his Father in law, Bob Plate. Rodney married Lynette Dianne Plate at Mallala in 1967. Rodney passed away in May 2018.
