William passed away in 1954:
"DEATH COUCHE — On 14th December 1954 at the Hutchinson Hospital, Gawler, William Arthur, the beloved husband of Edith Lillian Couche, of Fotheringham Terrace, Gawler, and loved father of Amy, Bert, Melva and Lilla (dec), aged 73 yrs. The funeral service was con-ducted by the Rev. A. R. Broadbent in the Dudley Park Cemetery on 16th December and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Taylor & Forgie, Undertakers, Gawler."[2]
"Mrs. Bert Couche and children, of Willaston, prior to their departure to join Mr. Couche at Alice Springs. Friends made presentation of a coral bangle and ear-rings and a rose bowl. Prior to the war, when he served with the R.A.N., Mr. Couche was in business at Alice Springs where the family are again resident. In Nov 1949, Bert Couche had sold up in Alice Springs ready for a move to Gawler after operating a hairdressing saloon in the “Alice” for 12 years." (Bunyip 19 Jul 1946)[3]
Bert and Fred returned to Gawler in 1949. By the 1960s Bert was operating his hairdresser/tobacconist store from the shop at the front of the theatre building on the corner of Calton Road [approx 69 Murray Street]. Ron Wasley, barber, moved to Bert Couche's site upon Bert's retirement and redevelopment of the theatre building and traded from there for many years.
Mrs Freda - Ladies Hairdresser
Mrs Freda Couche (nee Freda Linda Thomson) carried out her ladies hairdressing business from her Princess Street home (number unknown) from 1949 until she retired in 1980.[4] She was the wife of Mr Bert Couche (Herbert Arthur Couche), who had a Barber Shop in Murray Street, the couple married in 1937.[4] He sold the shop and they moved to Alice Springs, where Freda taught herself hairdressing and opened the first ever ladies hair salon there, before returning to Gawler.[4]
