Colin was a high school teacher at the Gawler High School, Lyndoch Road, in the 1950’s.

When the Murray River was in flood in 1956, Beverley Thom (nee Hartwig), and about 50 other students who lived on the eastern side of the Murray River at Waikerie/Ramco, were unable to attend the Waikerie/Ramco schools because the river was too high and the ferry was out of action. Accordingly, the Education Department decided to open a temporary school at Devlin's Pound and they selected Colin Brideson to be the teacher. Colin had only just finalized and passed his studies to become a teacher. So for 6 months the 50 students ranging from Reception to Grade 7 were taught in the Devlin's Pound building until such time as the river levels enabled the ferry to operate.

Fifty years later there was a commemoration service at Devlin's Pound and Beverley and nearly all of the others were in attendance. What was amazing was that every one of the 50 who were taught there were still alive.
