Born in the mid 1960s Daryl grew up on a small hobby farm between Gawler and Mallala with two brothers – one older and one younger. He initially attended Gawler River Primary School but when that closed he moved to Evanston Gardens Primary School. From there he graduated to Gawler High School. Following High School years Daryl attended the Sturt CAE and studied Teaching, majoring in music.
In the 1980s he married Susanne (Koch) and they moved to the NT where they took up a post at Hermannsburg with the Finke River Mission, teaching and living in an Aboriginal community. While there, their first Son Nicholas was born and after three years they moved to Gilgandra NSW with their second child Matthew, who was born at the end of their stint in the NT.
Following four years in NSW a call was extended by the Gawler Lutheran Church to return to Gawler to teach at Immanuel. The couple moved back to a house that Daryl’s family owned next to the farm and they renovated the old stone bungalow over the 14 years that they lived there. Daryl served at Immanuel for five years before moving to St Jakobi Lyndoch where he stayed for nine years. (During that time he commissioned a history book of the school to celebrate its 175th anniversary.)
Following St Jakobi a position was taken up at Golden Grove Lutheran Primary school and during this time Daryl gained his pilot certificate having been hooked through the Barossa Airshow that was hosted by St Jakobi school. After eight years at Golden Grove the opportunity arose to return to Immanuel and the thought of serving the community he loves so much saw a return to Gawler where he has now served for 5 years.
Susanne and Daryl live in Gawler and Daryl cites it as a privilege to live and work in our community.
