Oaklands on McKinlay Avenue, Gawler East, was originally the home of James Pile and his family. It also became the home of John McKinlay when he married James Pile's daughter, Jane, on 17 Jan 1863. John McKinlay remained at Oaklands until his death on 31 Dec 1872, aged 53, and Jane remained there for a further, 42 years, when she died childless in 1914.

At a later stage, the house was subdivided into two residences. One of the residences sold in 2018.
