Dear Doctor - an extract from Gawler Health Service ‘Hutchinson Hospital Mural News’ (2 Dec 2001)
When ex-'Hutch' nurses (pre 1950) gather they talk of "Dear Doctor Rice". Dr V de P Rice was described in an Advertiser obituary as, "A valued worker for the Hutchinson Hospital in Gawler" where he worked for almost 30 years. The hospital owes many of its early improvements to the foresight of Dr Rice, particularly in the field of surgery. During the 1940s, he was chairman of the Gawler and District Ambulance Association. He was also divisional surgeon for the Gawler Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade for more than 27 years.
His obituary also noted, "Local families have reason to be grateful for his generous nature".
Dr Rice is buried at Centennial Park Cemetery
