My husband James Chrisp is a descendant of James Harris (1824-1879) who arrived in Australia in 1849. He and his family moved to Gawler in 1852 and acquired Gawler Stores. During his life he was a member of the first town council, a trustee of St. George's Church, a supporter of the Institute, a member of the Lodge of Fidelity and a member of the Agricultural Society.
His son Frederick John Harris (185201908), Alfred Henry Harris (1854-1936), James Charles Harris (1850-1935) also worked at James Harris & Sons until it was sold to Eudunda Farmer's Cooperative Society in 1908.
Four generations of the Harris family resided in Gawler.
