It was reported in the ‘Bunyip’ Gawler, Friday, Oct. 24th., 1947 that:

C.J.Coles & Coy. Open at Gawler. (The ‘Bunyip’ made typos even in 1947 as it should be G.J. Coles & Coy., Ltd.)

“G.J. Coles & Coy., Ltd., open their second South Australian country branch at Gawler today (Friday). The first was opened prior to the war at Mt. Gambier. The manager (Mr. S.W. Mitchell) stated this week that staff would be obtained locally and girls were already being trained in window dressing, counter and office work. When permits could be secured his company intended to erect one of Australia’s most modern chain stores on the present site. Mr. Mitchell said no expense had been spared to display all the lines to the best advantage in the Gawler store – counters had been reconstructed and fittings were the best obtainable. A staff room was being prepared, and a wireless would be one of the amenities provided.”

The “Bunyip” reported on Friday, 12th August 1949 :

“Store Manager’s Transfer.” “Manager of G.J. Coles & Coy’s Gawler Branch for just on two years, Mr. S.W. Mitchell was transferred last week to manage the branch at Unley. In his stead Mr. C. Wilson has been transferred to Gawler from Adelaide.”

The “Bunyip” reported on Friday 30th July 1954 :

“Extensions to store”

“Work has already progressed considerably on extensions to G. J. Coles & Coy’s store in Gawler. It is understood re-building will cost in the vicinity of 19,000 pounds.” We thank John Clift for this information.
