This cottage originally belonged to William Bassett (I), who purchased 15 acres of land to farm in 1845 and adjoining land to expand farming activities in 1854. Following the coming of the railway in 1857, a portion of the farm land, including that upon which the cottage stood, was subdivided to form Bassett Town. Therefore, this cottage is the oldest in the Bassett Town area, it remained in the Bassett family until 1904 (Danvers, Pope & Jensen 1998). Its early construction probably explains why it faces ‘sideways’ instead of towards what later became Elizabeth Street, Bassett Town and eventually Twentyfirst Street, Gawler South.
