The triangular block of land on the corner of Tod Street and Scheibener Terrace, now known as 10 Tod Street, is the site of Gawler's oldest surviving church building, the original Wesleyan Church, which was built in 1850.[1] The building has been added to over time and in 2025 houses "The Corner Op Shop" (the eastern portion of the building, which was the original 1850 church) and "UCare Gawler" (the newer western portion of the building), which supports "families that are doing it tough in the Gawler district"; both are ministries of Transform Uniting Church.[2] The Tod Street bluestone boundary wall of the block was expertly repaired by stonemasons in 2025 following damage by a vehicle.
The original Trustees of the Wesleyan Church were John Jones, James Davey, Thomas Mankey, George Gozzard, William C Williamson, William Ashley, William Bottrill and James Martin.
According to the notes held by Bev Burke, what is now the Uniting Church Hall at 19 [sic] Tod Street was evidently the Chapel built in 1850. The land was purchased by the congregation and the foundations dug out by the first preacher John Jones and his father.
The trancept was added in 1858 and it was used as classrooms in 1875 until it became the Sunday School Hall and a lecture Hall [after the Church was built across the road].
Evidently services were held by Wesleyens from 1846 in the public school house on Fotheringham Terrace.
