In the 1860's this building was built for boot-maker Thomas Jones. Upon the demise of the original Bunyip premises by fire, it was acquired by William Barnet in 1885 and has remained the head quarters for the Bunyip newspaper since that time. The Barnet family produced the Bunyip from 1863 through to 2003. The Bunyip and the Humbug Society were well established prior to the occupation of this building.
