In the 1860's this building was built for boot-maker Thomas Jones. Upon the demise of the previous Bunyip premises on the opposite side of the road [next to the Prince Albert Hotel] by fire in 1885, it was acquired by William Barnet and remained the headquarters for the Bunyip newspaper until the early 1960's when it moved next door to 120 murray street The Barnet family produced the Bunyip from 1863 through to 2003. The Bunyip and the Humbug Society were well established prior to the occupation of this building.
