Southern end of Gawler Racecourse

In 2012, when a new road was constructed at the southern end of Gawler Racecourse (from Adelaide Road to Barnet Road), the name Tulloch Road was chosen after Miss J.P. Tulloch, 1908 Gawler Primary School Dr Dawes Medalist; dux of the year 7 girls.

It was a most appropriate choice for this Racecourse location as Tulloch was, from 1954, a thoroughbred racehorse regarded as one of the all time greats of Australian horse-racing history. Tulloch was trained by the legendary Tommy Smith and Tulloch compiled a racing record of 36 wins, 12 seconds, and 4 thirds. Only once in 53 starts did Tulloch fail to run a place.

Tulloch Road was named after Miss J. P. Tulloch who, in 1908, was the winner of the Dr. Dawes Medal for the girl who came top of Grade 7 at Gawler Primary School.

Her surname was one of 350 new names collected in the year 2000 for Town of Gawler Council to consider and approve as a possible new Gawler street name.

When Gawler Green was planned, a new street was created at the southern end of Gawler Racecourse and the name Tulloch was appropriately selected as the new street’s name.

Foaled in New Zealand in 1954, Tulloch was a thoroughbred stallion; regarded as one of the 3 finest racehorses in Australian racing history.

Tulloch was named after the Scottish town where the owner’s mother was born. Tulloch had great achievements; generally ridden by Neville Selwood and trained by Tommy Smith. From 53 starts, Tulloch achieved 36 wins, 12 second place and 4 third place finishes; only once not achieving a place, a creditable 7th in the 1960 Melbourne Cup.

Major wins included the Cox Plate (as a six year old in 1960 – smashing the track and Australian record for 10 furlongs), as well as the Caulfield Cup, Caulfield Guineas and the VRC Derby. He held the record for the 12 furlongs (1957 Caulfield Cup) and took 2 seconds off Phar Lap’s 28 year old record at the AJC Derby.

Tulloch was one of the 5 inaugural horses inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Tulloch died on 30th June 1969.
