[Robert Haysom Research] : "the first meeting of the Institute was held in James Martin's cottage on 21st October 1857 and on September 1st 1885: Decided by Institute Committee on the recommendation of Dr. Schomburgk to cut down the Moreton Bay fig trees growing in front of the Institute."

The foundation stone of the Institute was laid 30th May 1870.
