Robert Haysom research says that it was a Charles Edson [a Millwright for James Martin Phoenix Foundry from 1848 - 1876] who suggested that the tower of the new Post Office should be extended to accommodate a clock. "February 28 1877: first conversation by telephone between Adelaide and Gawler as a result of an experiment conducted by Mr. Chas. Todd."
