- January 9 , 11.30 am , Light Finniss & Co private Surveyors returned to the area now known as Dead Mans Pass South Para River to lay out a Special 4000 acre Survey and plan the town of Gawler, the expedition continued on to the North Para River to explore further.
- January 13 -15, Light records returning and surveying the area, following up on a dead body buried under an old tree. (now Dead Mans Pass)
- January 31, Colonial Treasurer's letter acknowledging reciept of the purchase money for land in the Gawler Special Survey
- July 1, The plan of Gawler Town (with Colonel Lights stamp) created, surveyed by Light Finniss & Co
- August, remaining portion of Gawler Town Plan is dated August
- October 4, original grant of the land in this Special Survey made to Henry Dundas Murray and John Reid of 4000 acres including 1578 acres purchased in England and 2,422 acres purchased in South Australia . There were seven preliminary land orders of 134 acres each and eight 80 acre land orders , with the town being laid out by Mr Wm Jacobs from a plan supplied by Colonel Light. Selected proprietors were Henry Dundas Murray, John Reid, Stephen King, James Fotheringham, Thomas Stubbs, Henry Johnson, John Lindsay Patterson, John Sutton, Robert Tod, Patrick James Tod, William Feild Porter, Rev. CB Howard
- October 30, Golden Fleece Hotel ( later known as Old Spot Hotel) first opens its doors
