'William' Wilhelm Ernst Anders (1836-1917) established a blacksmithing business and foundry at Freeling in 1865. In 1903 he passed the business on to five of his sons.
In 1934 the company, operating as 'E Anders & Sons' purchased the cast iron and brass Britannia Foundry at Barnet Road, Evanston, which had been established by James Robinson in 1887.
Items produced at the foundry during its time as Anders included plough shares, garden ploughs, axels, troughs, cast iron furniture and door stops.
From at least the mid 1940s the foundry was managed by Cyril Anders (1912-1955), grandson of Wilhelm Ernst Anders. Upon Cyril's death in 1955, Murray West took on the role of manager; Murray had been working at the foundry since 1934, when it was still Britannia Foundry, and he remained on as manager until the foundry closed in 1977.
Other employees over the years included Tom Symes, Frank Burnett, Rob Symes, George Symes, Frank Downs and Bryce Atyeo.

David West [via GHT Facebook 27 Aug 2026] recollected "My father Murray West worked here and managed the plant for more than 40 years including the eventual closure. His father Frederick Charles West also worked there from the late 1800’s. My mother threatened me that if I didn’t pass my intermediate exam in 1967 that I would be a 3rd generation.
Casting day like we are seeing in this pic was always Friday. Visitor at the rear may be Sir Thomas Playford."[1]
Ross Dawkins [via GHT Facebook 27 Aug 2026] recollected "I well remember picking up shares [ie. plough shares] from Anders and was fascinated seeing the workmen setting up the sand moulds for the next casting."[1]
