He later worked for Mr James Martin. 1

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. On April 30th, Mr. Philip Challen, living with his son Leslie in High St., passed his 91st birthday. As many of his family as possible were present to celebrate the natal day.

Mr. Challen is remarkably bright in his memory, but his physical locomotion is at low ebb, due to trouble in his legs. The old gentleman came to Gawler when he was three years of age and has spent his life in the district. He served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith with Mr Thomas Martin, and then with Mr John Allen with whom he worked for 20 years, afterwards working at James Martin's works.

As a young man, he was a promoter of Christy Minstrel shows, and of those who took part, there remains only himself and Mr Dan Gillies of Prospect. Mr. Challen has been a Forester for 72 years. Of the family, there, were four girls of whom three: are living; Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. W. Butcher and Miss Challen and three sons, Messrs Leslie, Wilfred and Leonard.

There, are 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. 2
