My name is Gunther Frensch, I am 73 years of age (in 2024) and have lived in Gawler for 37 years.
I grew up in Tanunda and did my schooling in Tanunda Lutheran School and Nuriootpa High School. I have worked for the Government, mainly as an accountant, since leaving school. I gained a Bachelor of Business Studies with Deakin University in the 1980’s. My last position in Government was the Manager Finance at the Gawler Health Service retiring from full time work in 2005. After retiring from full time work, I worked part time at the Barossa Golf Club and Mallala Hospital, fully retiring in 2013.
As a young person I always liked outdoor activities which included bush walking and surfing. I still go surfing now some 60 years later. I borrowed my father’s camera when I was 11 and was hooked on photography. Originally I took landscape and surfing photos. About 10 years ago a chance photo of a Golden Whistler, while I was bush walking in Mt Crawford Forest, rekindled an interest I had in birds when I was young and started my bird photography. I have been taking mainly bird photos since and absolutely love it. It fits in well with my enjoyment of bushwalking and being out in nature.
Apart from taking bird photos and processing them, I show them on social media and submit them to Birdlife Australia of which I am a member. I have had photos published in their Magazine and a number of my photos, through Birdlife Australia, have been used in brochures and overseas magazines. Bird photography is helping me enjoy my retirement. I also enjoy showing my photos to groups such as the Gawler History team and seeing others enjoy our beautiful birds.
