according to "The Church of the Transfiguration - Gawler South" by Beatrice E McConnell 1993.....
page 10...The land for the Gawler South Hall was given [to the Church of England Gawler Parish] by Mrs R. St. Mark Dawes and it was decided by the vestry in October, 1912 to build a hall, and a building committee was formed. In 1913 a tender from Dieckmann Bros. of 447 pounds 18 shillings and 11 pence was accepted. This was "to include the floor". The hall was to be named the Gawler South Church Hall and Mrs. Dawes was asked to lay the foundation stone. This she did on 2nd November 1913 and the hall was dedicated on 24th February, 1914." The Gawler Anglican Parish sold the Hall in 2002. Brian Thom was then Priest Warden and who assisted to advance the sale process.
Brian Thom says "In the 1960's, the Anglican youth - Young Anglicans of Gawler [YAGS] organised a regular "Out-town Casual Dance" in this South Hall. 5KA's then top announcer Roger Dowsett, was engaged to be the regular MC and groups including The Strangers and singer Bev Harrell were engaged. All the organising was done by the YAGS members, including the acquisition of card-tables so that a coffee lounge was able to be established out in the back room. While no liquor was served, there was the inevitable intoxicated patron who was ushered out to the coffee lounge to be encouraged to sober up and more than once, the local police were able to transport miscreants to the local cells - using their motor bike and sidecar as transportation. This regular Casual Dance proved popular and continued for many months. If there was ever a poor crowd, Roger would accept remuneration of 5 pounds to cover his time and transport costs from Adelaide."
We have been told that when the Lyric cinema closed (Horrocks Place), Jim McKenzie made use of the hall as a temporary cinema.
